Games You Played Today Oratorio Tangram

DDRJake is what led me back into this game again; him and Siu-king (does World Conquests). Oh god this game just somehow plugs right into my focus because it’s really hard to pull away from it.

grimrock was a really good time!!! i found the final boss hilarious.

how’s the sequel?

Puzzlier and more interesting stats but I didn’t stick with it

The sequel is way better IMO. Reverse of Felix, I played the sequel first and then tried the first one but didn’t stick with it because the game just seemed like an early prototype of the much fuller game I had just finished.

It’s sort of like Narbacular Drop -> Portal (but not like Portal -> Portal 2) if that makes sense. Felt to me that they really wanted to make Grimrock II in the first place and scaled down their ambitions for their first release

I felt like the original Grimrock had a lot of harder puzzles than the sequel (whose puzzles, bar just a couple, felt pretty simple/straightforward), but 2 was so much more non-linear and varied in its terrain and environments that I can’t help but give it the easy win of the two, even if I think some individual setpieces of the original were better.

The non-linearity did also have the effect of allowing you to skip around among various half-solved puzzles, which I think is mostly a win, too (rather than perhaps being stonewalled in a single area since you need to solve a specific puzzle to proceed anywhere at all).

…okay, 1 has to earn some points for having the most absolutely ludicrous endboss.

Grimrock II’s final boss is super cool and hilarious in his own way, so I’d call that a tie. In II his appeal is mostly about the ingame context and setup for him over the course of the entire game. It would be hard to explain why he’s so cool just by showing a video of the fight to someone who hasn’t played the game, but that only makes it better in a way.

yeah, I think this was part of what got me to put it down – the movement in that engine is so goofy that having such straightforward puzzles combined with the weird combat made me feel like I wasn’t getting much out of it

grimrock 1’s puzzles were copied wholesale from earlier games so if you remembered seeing those puzzles before they were basically non-existent.

Which isn’t really a fault of the game. Repopularizing a niche genre with basically an HD serial-numbers-gently-covered-with-masking-tape remake of Dungeon Master isn’t a bad thing at all.

But in Grimrock II you can fish by hurling your entire party into the river, then frantically clicking on fish and climbing up a ladder before you drown

5 far cry games since far cry 2 and not a one of them yet has played anything like 2 was promised to be (like a real time procedural way of the samurai type yojimbo simulator)

the only Far Cry game i would ever play is the one where you can ride a smilodon, because that’s an otherwise untapped video game niche afaik

Oh wait i just remembered Dragon Quest 8 exists, never mind

It was always a treat to go to my cousins’ houses because I loved just looking at their rooms; their He-Man and Transformer toys were always standing up on desks and counters, which was such a weird thing, compared to my compartmentalized drawers and bins and boxes. Hanging out with friends or my youth group in high school was similarly fascinating, because everybody’s room was such as contrast and an insight into what people valued. Rarely, Facebook can provide an approximately similar window into friends’ interests, but it’s not really the same.

I started playing Shadowrun Returns after spending an hour creating a character. I don’t know if I like it. It’s kinda hand holdy even if I pretend it’s just a point and click adventure. I wanna feel like I’m at a disadvantage in that world.

Not a huge fan of the artstyle either. I just can’t smell the piss on the streets like in the 16 bit ones
