games you played today chronicles X: ten things I played about you

I started playing the re4 remake. It’s fine I guess, the village fight was fun even though it didn’t feel quite as intense for some reason. And I think not having ps2 graphics is sort of sucking the charm out of the whole thing…I mean the whole ambience in general is weird. It’s not as sinister.

This is correct! You’re incentivized to do the DLCs as early as you can because they give you some really useful powers, but they totally break the pacing.

Funny how that was a consistent problem with xbox 360 era dlc is that often, it’d be available to you right at the start and completely break the balance of the progression for the rest of the game. Worst of all was the way Fallout 3 and New Vegas handled it, where it’d be this constant, nagging reminder in your quest log, but you’d have to ignore it to avoid ruining your experience.

oh yeah that happened in breakpoint too I kept wanting to accept the big shiny huge text quest on my screen and every time veronica would ahve to say NOOO DONT CLICK IT THATS THE DLC IT’LL RUIN THE STORY and I still accidentally clicked it once, because there’s just a constant homing beacon to the DLC and I’d get it mixed up with my actual waymark

I’ve been playing vampire survivors clones to unwind before I get back to working on my fan tl project. The best of these so far has been Vampire Hunters:

And that’s mainly because its secretly closer to Call of Duty Zombies except harder and with more progression. It also cleverly plays with the fact that you don’t have full awareness of your surroundings compared to most of these games giving you a wide view of the world. It made me realize I actually miss playing Zombies.

I think some folks here know that I played Tetris 2 before I played actual Tetris. And then when I found actual Tetris I was confused because it lacked a color matching component too it. I mean the commercials on tv had all those brightly colored blocks, the colors had to mean something right?

This week I picked up Tetrachroma which is a game that finally corrects this whole lack of color matching problem that Tetris has had from day one.

…in all seriousness I have played hours of Tetris by this point in my life. And Tetrachroma’s additions push it in new directions that are simultaneously pure evil and extremely clever at the same time. Making a game that is 90% just Tetris but that last ten percent is color matching and manipulation recontextualizes every block, every formation, and the entire possibility space is different than normal Tetris.

I’m really enjoying this galaxy brain falling block puzzler.

My one complaint about tetrachroma so far it falls short of the Tetrachroma Effect Connected I’ve been playing in my dreams the past week.

i thought about doing this last week and started playing regular re4 instead

having not replayed it since launch window it turns out i had forgotten that it’s maybe the funniest game i’ve ever played

The best thing thats happened so far is that I shot three rats and Leon quietly exclaimed “Yes!” to himself. I german suplexed a ganado and his head didn’t even explode. Very sad.

When the plagas erupt from El Gigante’s back, I liked how Leon goes “Oh, you got worms too!??”

Some of the dialog is funny in the same way as the original I think. But I also waffled on whether I liked the game or not the whole time I was playing it, if that says anything.

i still think the start of hypnospace is bad at leading you into the kind of game it is, but i have been enjoying it more now that i know what kind of game it is

people are right though, its so christian!! why are there so many christians?? i hope i unlock like a goth zone or something with poems about satan and shit at some point

so far the vibe of the game i’m getting is “what if the wild west of the 90s internet had the bullshit corporation meddling it has today”

it’s funny enough that there are distractingly discolored barrels and boxes that you have to attack to get randomized loot, let alone that they might have a snake in them, let alone that if you kill the snake it always drops a healing egg, let alone the true galaxy-brain detail that the eggs are the only items in the game that are destroyable meaning that if you freak out a little too much and swing your knife at the snake an extra time you ruin your healing egg

Gave the latest CoD a chance through Gamepass. Was surprised how much more like a 007 game from when I was a kid it was than a Medal of Honor game. Played a bit more and began to suspect those new Wolfenstein games must have been way more influential on a sphere of triple-A games I just totally stopped paying attention to sometime during the late-2010s. Just interesting.

These games are a bit too challenging for me to play now that they have super realistic lighting and shit: can’t see any of the enemies. Reminds me of trying to fight brown clad soldiers in a brown landscape in MAG forever ago on the PS3.

I had to pause my campaign playthrough because there was a game halting bug that means I have to replay the entire Phantom Pain-lite desert storm level, also man who deleted his username is about to leave gamepass so I have to finish that, and I’m sorry to the fellas in task force 141 but this was looking like it’s maybe the best call of duty game.

could be other way around,
The listed director of Wolfenstein 2009/creative director at Raven during Return to Castle Wolfenstein, has more or less exclusively been doing design work on Call of Duty since then including this one. Between wolf 2014 riffing on 2009 & Black Ops 2’ branching narrative, elaborate retro minigame, easter egg tunnel hunts, one-offs, etc. i think original credit may lie there(Also evidently design lead on hexen 2 rip to the humans absorbed in2 the acivision-blizzard-microsoft franchise mines)

I buy this! Really, the MachineGames Wolfensteins feel less innovative when you consider how ambitious RtCW was. Didn’t know there was such a direct connection at CoD.

I got back on gamepass to play Blops 6 and that’s pretty good so far, I’m only on the fourth mission, but the real star of the show for me has ended up being Vampire Survivors. Holy hell can’t believe I slept on this one for so long.

yea its a little hard to trace to what degree the people involved are continuous between Xatrix / Raven & Treyarch after 23 + years but @ least a few names there seem 2 be consistently on the novel fps grind & it makes sense that CoD is the landing place post absorption into acti-blob
this offbrand reddit/forum(?) comment seems to sketch out the CoD/quake mod lineage a little clearer
