games you played today chronicles X: ten things I played about you

Lol, yeah, the stuff you do to the bosses in Astro Bot is so weirdly visceral. It’s always been that way with these games too. punching a guy in each eye until they’re red, knocking a guy’s teeth out, it gets kind of grisly! Reminds me of those old Ultraman episodes where Ultraman would just brutally dismember the monster of the week.

I thought the boss where Astro Bot performs an unanaesthetized castration on a giant tanuki was going a bit far

I can’t believe, after 20 years, Astro Bot of all things spoiled Ico for me. I had no idea Yorda transformed into a black electricity thing. I never finished the game and had no idea that’s a thing about her. Anyone know where her chair is though? It was in the gacha pull but I just see her chasing a pigeon in circles. Is it a rare animation?

Edit: What are the chances of a Concord bot?

well, that’s (ICO talk)

what Yorda does when you leave her alone - she starts running to birds/pigeons. Similar to SotC and Last Guardian, your companions have some interesting idle animations!

Also, that bench suspiciously looks like the save-bench used in ICO, fwiw.

Oh I meant I was asking is her bench part of a rare animation, because I didn’t see any bench near her in the desert. She’s just chasing the pigeon. Is it just glitched and the bench should be there?

did they forget/ignore that the original save bench looked like two PS2 memory cards or was that too many layers of reference deep?

I feel like this is a distinct possibility given when it released unless they patched it out quietly.

I found my first bot I don’t recognise which I think is a PS1 JRPG guy.

Continuing to play Final Fantasy II at the only sound seeming pace I’ve ever heard recommended, in 20-30 min sessions just every now and then. I’m only now just going after the Sunfire. Most of my time has been paranoically grinding levels off random over-world trash as I read up often conflicting info and discussions about how the systems in this game actually work, which is only complicated by the differences between each version.I just don’t want to get far along and become stuck. This is maybe the scariest and hard-effort requiring JRPG I’ve ever played. And that’s thrilling in a sort of way.

This is really frustrating because to me they did a really good job of making the world feel more tactile. I don’t know if it’s some kind of hardware or cost consideration that made them drop the HD rumble from the PAC or if it’s something you can firmware-patch in…

Nothing to add (this met the expectation of “what if you wanted more Astro’s Playroom” just fine for me) but I wanted to bring up the boss before the last boss fight being a whole history-spanning game console/peripheral rail shooter battle playing Thunder Force music being a call back to the Segagaga mini game that made my head spin the most out of all the deep cuts in this.

What the hell.

Does the PAC have a speaker? Along with the haptics, the game makes heavy use of the speaker as well to sell the texture of the world.

Also, Bot of War (end of World 2) was cooler than it should have been, and I just tried out a little of the beginning of Slo-mo Casino (beginning of World 3) before stopping for the night. Man, this is a cool game, isn’t it? Going to be upset if this stage doesn’t have Devil Dice, No One Can Stop Mr. Domino, and Sonic the Hedgehog though. I started expecting Mr. Mosquito in that one room in the mouse level, so I was surprised to find him later elsewhere.

all my Playstation posting today combined with my disappointment at wukong reminded me I never actually finished ragnarok despite really liking it and just not being in the mood for the tremendous value of hurr grr it offered on release. so I’ve got the spear now though I’ve no idea how far that puts me from the end

I guess I’m playing a Yakuza game for the first time. Verdict: it’s single player Final Fantasy 14

At least an Xbox relea—

No speaker. I usually play with headphones anyway. The few occasions when you have to blow into the microphone grind things to a halt as I retrieve the regular controller

yoinked space marine 2, discovered my rig finally cannot run a new videogame at 1080p 60fps, for it has too much graphics

throwing lots of nimble targets at a guy who is categorically not dante from devil may cry is an interesting gamble

BLOXADE by Ratttz – This is a match-3 game, but the twist is, every time you go to the next level, the number of blocks you must match increases by 1. So at stage 1 it’s a match-3, at stage 2 it’s a match-4, at stage 3 it’s a match-5, and so on up to stage 10.

Finding peace with the sisyphean Castlevania Portrait of Ruin Fresh Level 1 Hard Mode challenge « Realistic mode »

On top of the disadvantages brought by the level 1 cap and usual hard mode maluses (the damage algorithm is worse, some enemies have faster attacks and can cause status ailments etc) the real kicker is that hard mode has an evil built-in minimum enemy damage threshold that would normally scale with level but instead starts at max nuisance on the level 1 challenge.

This means all enemy attacks do 100 damage minimum. Jonathan / Charlotte start with 128 HP and can only get more HP by finding rare HP+ potions which only give +15 max HP. They die in two hits at best for I assume the first half of the game, and one hit at worst. Any multi hit attack is an instant kill and the respawning bats and medusa heads are back to their legendary Classicvania nightmare status. Any enemy is a huge threat to be respected and the player has to be paranoid at all times.

I find these are the perfect games for this kind of challenge because there are a lot of player options and enemy patterns are mostly fair and readable (unlike Bloodstained lol)
Player damage also doesn’t take too much of a hit compared to normal mode which helps keep the challenge from being a chore.

I still die about 100 times per hour though.

I also somehow convinced myself that the elusive rare drop from the super tough Invisible Man enemy Must Be extremely good so I grinded on them for a while (I died a bunch and had to backtrack multiple times) until one finally dropped : a melon

Oh, weird. On the regular controller, if you mute the controller’s mic then the game just auto completes any mic-blowing activities.

Astro Bot does a neat thing where the worlds culminate in a level based on a popular series. A subtle thing about it is each series relates to the generation they are from.

World 1: PS1 Ape Escape
World 2: PS2 God of War, but like the new God of War not the old God of War
World 3: PS3 Uncharted, not Demon’s Souls smh
World 4: PS4 Horizon presumably? I haven’t got there yet

World 5 I have no idea what they’re gonna do because the PS5 doesn’t really have a franchise on the same scale that originated on that console.
