games you played today chronicles X: ten things I played about you

Ooh I didn’t know about SubRoc either : )

You can tell that they spent most of their time polishing the first area after the tutorial because it’s so dense with possibilities and things to do that every area afterwards feels bare and too large and too directed. Something like this thrives on the feeling of fluid chaos.

I love this game though, volition’s second best maybe. I really want another open world game like this about causing property damage. Fuck ilvl and legendary weapons, just give me escalating amounts of C4 to destroy buildings.

I have tried several times to get into rf guerrilla and I always bounce off because the gta-like structure feels in direct competition with the blowing up buildings aspect and I hate that gta shit. Feels like a game that doesn’t know which parts of it are good. Real curates egg in that most pejorative sense

It works best when enhancing that structure and encouraging freeform or clever destruction, and is worst when you get bogged down in a gun fight or hostage rescue. I think most of the highlights are in the beginning before the stupid plot starts to take hold like a brain parasite.

I made it past the first area only to come across the worst type of GTA mission: Go to this area, kill a bunch of guys, then blow up 4 structures. I kept dying at the first part because there’s like 12 guys you have to kill, and the guns are just terrible. Your reticle is a huge circle, and the bullets don’t have tracers on them, or really visible hit effects, so there isn’t a lot of good feedback. Anyway after you kill all the bad guys you have to destroy 4 PA towers that are blasting propaganda, except they’re parts of bigger buildings. You can’t shoot them, and blowing them up is tricky because you have to stick them with explosives. Destroying the main structure is frustrating because so many buildings in RFG maintain their structural integrity with twigs and blowing them up requires destroying all the walls and then some. I was retrying this mission multiple times - ramming the buildings with vehicles - blowing up supports - and they wouldn’t go down. the entire time i’m being shot at by waves of enemies and shooting back feels terrible. I might try to finish the rest of it, but it’s much more fun to just toot around and blow things up.

Yeah, that’s exactly what I was remembering. So many missions are just “shoot a bunch of guys with the worst guns ever put into a videogame and then try to do the fun part while a million more guys shoot at you”

the vehicles are also just really bad. so many GTA likes have vehicles as a central traversal mechanic but they’re terrible to drive, and then they make you do missions in them and it’s like “aughhhh”

some vehicles have turrets on them but I clicked away from the one tutorial tool tip screen that told me how to use them, great job me

Just the other day I knowingly wiped an old laptop that contained source code of an unreleased game from an old job. I considered transferring the code to an external hard drive for posterity but decided not to. The game sucked. Felt good to delete it.

I proved myself culturally sensitive by playing the Super Metroid Romhack T O U R O F I T A L Y . @RT-55J you are really skilled! You kept leading me and surprising me. I did not find your two secret rooms I don’t think. So that makes me sad. I had a good time with this despite being Super Metroid, and let me tell you I hate Super Metroid.

I’ll say I did eventually figure stuff out but it took grit and me thinking real hard about Super Metroid to accomplish some feats. Everything is reasonable, but you do gotta know Super Metroid.

im playing the klonoa remaster on switch and dont think it’s very good. moving around feels like crap and the level design is really dull. also i find the picking up enemies thing clunky

There’s some very palpable input lag in the Switch version that is a huge bummer.

played some Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy at the Game On exhibit at the museum until some nerd told me I needed to wait longer in the mud. thanks man I’ve played it before, yeah I know about the hints.

watching so many zoomers saw the “thing your aunt gave you which you don’t know what it is” and latched onto it

what is it

eat the thing

look at thing

throw thing away

also played some Combat with youngest, wow that’s fun to blast your opponent’s biplane while hiding in a cloud. a game that wouldn’t work with remote multiplayer unless it transmitted a joystick movement creak as players adjusted themselves unseen in the privacy of the cloud

did anyone get so far as the babelfish puzzle

absolutely no

a shame, they should have just loaded a save at that point because that’s the best microcosm of the game as a whole

After a bunch of missions Red Faction Guerilla does the correct thing and gives the player a mech to stomp through a bunch of buildings with. The game is essentially a 3rd person Blast Corps game at that point. Trying to save up for the rocket launcher so the game is more fun.

The driving mechanics are terrible, cars don’t have a tight enough turning radius and they flip really easily. at one point on a mission I am driving two NPCs back to base, the vehicle flips, I get out and they get out, but the vehicle lands on one of them, killing the NPC that got out because I got out of the car.

I must come to you humble select button that Metroid Prime has bad points. The mid-game where everything becomes a damage sponge and attritrion battle sucks. Then the game design becomes placing the Next Step on opposite side of the map so you are forced to run across the whole world. I’ve been working on this save for years now and have tried to pick it up 3 times this week. I get trapped in a room with 4 uninteresting enemies and just lose my edge and turn it off.

On the big Gamecube 3 I am surprised how far down Metroid Prime has gone for me. The first two hours or so is great but being stuck in this grey cave is so tedious. Super Mario Sunshine is designed around getting your own fun and Wind Waker is so beautiful and charming I can forgive they only made 1/3rd a game.

I did not enjoy having to color match space pirates in order to do damage to them, or the late game Metroids that will change their colors as you’re fighting them.

Maybe if selecting different weapons wasn’t a slightly more complicated process than it needed to be. Ah well.

That we raked Eternal Darkness and DmC over the coals for doing the color coded enemies but not Metroid Prime is incredible to me, one of the people that rakes the other two over the coals.

At least in Eternal Darkness it was a suggestion not required.
