Played enough Super Mario 3D World in 3-player co-op to have the credits roll and uhhh geez that game just builds in constant inadvertent co-op griefing as an unavoidable game mechanic hey

I felt that way about the New Super Mario Bros games, which I still think are some of the most embittered co-op experiences I have ever had.

Co-op only in the sense that you are technically cooperating, but each extra member makes the game that much harder

NSMB really should have been enough to tell me to leave my ex, our play styles were wildly incompatible. She wanted to collect every coin, I wanted to never stop running forward

dragon quest builders is a lot more fun on a handheld. also, it looks incredible on the vita! probably one of the best looking games on the system

i’ve been recovering from surgery so have been going through the backlog

impossible lair: i say doom is a zelda dungeon game where all the puzzles are optional, this is a puzzle platformer where (mostly) all the puzzles are optional. also just really fun to play, very donkey kong countryish, much better than the first game

jedi knight outcast: the switch version of this is virtually unplayable, really needs a mouse and keyboard

wandersong: a delightful musical puzzle platformer. not much depth, but just a real feel good game to play

riot: an ambitious idea, but playing it feels terrible. it feels like a prototype that needed way more work

star wars racer: i was worried at first because the new control scheme is terrible, but luckily you can use classic controls. looks weird in HD, but still a lot of fun. they don’t have the two engine control mode, but that was more of a gimmick no one used seriously to my knowledge so whatever

sushi striker: great presentation and really entertaining writing, but the core gameplay is just too simple to hook me in, despite them trying to add depth with different powers and stuff. feels like a causal mobile game with a massive budget. i paid $5 for it, so got my moneys worth and it might be okay if you want to play something where you can switch your brain off, but i can see why it bombed. would watch an anime based on it though

soldam: never heard of this puzzler until recently, but this remake is top stuff. it took me a while to get into it because it seems too simple at first, but then i played the puzzle mode and realised there is a lot more too it if you want high scores and to survive into the later levels. really enjoyed it, has quickly become one of my favourite tetris variants. i just with the fruits were different shapes as well as different colours for colour blind people

wonderful 101 remastered: only played this a litte, love the presentation and humour but seems pretty clunky to play

penguin wars: remake of a favourite arcade game of mine, the presentation and humour in this is incredible. the game itself also adds lots of new mechanics and ideas to keep things fresh. very fast and fun. there are some things that irk me, but i feel i just need to adjust to them

zelda links awakening remake: still a very good game. remake looks great but i found it frustrating that the framerate couldnt stay consistent. some people say it also lost something by making the camera always follow link, and while i agree it makes it harder to process some scenes, i dont think its that big a deal. the qol changes are worth it imo

final fantasty adventure: played this in collection of mana, it’s really impressive how big and huge this game feels for a game boy game. i enjoyed it a lot and played throug the whole thing, though dungeons can often feel samey, and the combat is a bit jank. also there is one puzzle i would NEVER HAVE FIGURED OUT but overall this is a very impressive game boy action rpg

contra collection: i bought this on sale hoping it would mix the english translation of hard corps with the japanese difficulty which is basically my dream run and gun, but sadly that is not the case. still a really good collection, but that’s relaly just want i want lol

namco museum: i just bought this for splatter house and it seems like a good port so i am happy with this despite the small selection of games and extras because SPLATTER HOUSE oh it aso has pacman vs. initially i balked because you need two switches to play it, but so many of my friends have switches thats really easy for me to just bring mine over to a gathering to play it. really nice version of it. loses some of the charm by not having to use a game boy, but plays better as a result

Did a quick search and everyone who’s mentioned Subnautica has had positive things to say but there’s been no real discussion of it. It does so many things exactly right: signposting without handholding; folding player capabilities into the narrative structure; always tempting you to take that next risk, requiring you always to go the next layer down before you can really be prepared for it. The only ā€œsurvivalā€ game I’ve ever given a shit about. Also a poster child for the work that thoroughgoing interactivity does in making a story evocative. If you were to write the story out like a wikipedia entry with perfect knowledge it is bog standard cliche sf stuff, but the way it’s revealed to you piecemeal, mysterious and after genuine effort, elevates it.

If only thalassophobia wasn’t such a thing for me.

Been playing the crash bandicoot remaster and golly gosh that game is fucking hard.

Like, I wasted 30 lives+ on a level called Road to Nowhere, which is a bridge where the platforms fall out after about half a second, and there’s seemingly invincible hog baddies that you have to, I guess, jump over with perfect timing? And now I have 4 lives, so I guess I have to go grind out some more because I need all the lives I can get.

It’s so fucking fiddly, and also whether or not an enemy can be spun/jumped on is not telegraphed at all. And since the hit detection is so fiddly I can’t even properly determine it through experimentation - what if I just missed? Gotta try 3 more times to make sure I am getting accurate results.

i think I might be done with the first game. Might skip to the second one.

Also been playing Shadow of War which I’m liking much better than the first game. I couldn’t tell you exactly why. It seems easier, which is good, and the environments are much more varied. It’s also not like, super depressing I guess?

I’m also going in with the attitude that the orcs are the best, and I’m only killing them because that’s how you get to know orcs. It’s obvious to me that the bulk of the love in this game is saved for the orcs - they have so much detail poured into their every aspect. I too love the orcs and all their weird bullshit.

Also, uh, Celebrimbor is obviously a badguy holy shit. I don’t think it was as obvious in the first game.

I like the interplay between Big Celebrimbor , who’s a fucking genocidal maniac, and Little Talion, who goes into every situation with the wide-eyed naivete of a child…a child who murders orcs a lot.

But yeah, good game to push buttons in. I hate that Shelob is Sexy Lady now but I also appreciate spider ladies so, I’ll live with it.

Just got to act 2 though so we’ll see how it goes.

Something to note about that collection is that all three games are using the hitboxes and physics from Crash 2 but did not account for that change in the level designs. Crash 2 and 3 are much closer (but not identical) so it’s less apparent there.

Crash 2 was my game of the year last year, and I think it is the best tuned in the trilogy in terms of game feel and difficulty.

Do you know if the Spyro remaster is similar? My partner has been losing her mind missing jumps it looks like she should make.

No idea, sorry.

No worries. It is just gorgeous to look at with super smooth framerate. I kind of get the 4K Mario envy now.

Oh god, judging from the beginning Mario and the Origami King is a brand new Wii era Nintendo game

Sunk cost fallacy is forcing me to keep an open mind 40 minutes in but it’s dire

Yeah, it has some very charming moments mixed in there, it’s cute, and you can really zone out with it, but… It’s not a great game. It’s way too long and full of busy-work. The battle system is kind of clever, but it’s unique in that it manages to be both too difficult AND too simplistic at the same time.

I let a coworker talk me into finally getting Sekiro last week. It arrived today.

I can’t beat the first miniboss (that guy at the top of the stairs) after several tries. If the whole game is like that fight but progressively harder, I think I might already be done with it.

The hint says to hit L1 when an enemy attack lands. That seems to work about half the time. Or maybe I have no sense of timing. I think I successfully parried a total of two times in the Souls games, one of which was intentional. I was able to do it occasionally against the Bloodborne brick guys, though.

it makes a terrible first impression on many people (myself included), for what it’s worth – the parry timing is pretty natural once you’ve internalized it, but until you do, and realize when you’re supposed to press your advantage, it’s no fun.

you can effectively spam block (think of it like wiggling your sword) when you start out and that’s actually an OK way to learn
