Caverns of Hammerfest

(I miss this game and I know I could play it on some special software some people made, but I guess i don’t. I actually joined the discord for that group but it had a bunch of weird musk apologetics in it and it always felt a little off in there)

I kept thinking about Necronomicon. Last Gladiators felt really flat by comparison: the graphical overlays don’t feel like they fit, the music is nowhere near the blasting sonic storm that is Necronomicon, and the table design is depressingly weak.

Update: drat it I’d forgotten the Necronomicon is a Lovecraft invention.

…

Nope, can’t do it, there are plenty of games I can play without Lovecraft directly in them. eBay order cancelled. Bah. Bah I say.

Yet another glorious blessed day I do not have to load up Marvel Rivals and pretend to be interested in individual character abilities.

I think Highguard coulda worked if it was 12v12 chaos. Every game designer is obsessed with perfect balance so it can be an esport but forget that real people need to play the game for it to make money so it should be, IDK, fun?

To make up for it I’ve relented on Last Gladiators, haha. Was accidentally looking at the Japanese Demo version one of these times, oops.

Not getting the 9.7 version even though it probably fixes some of the obvious funky physics wobbles–it’s got a Lovecraft ad plastered on to the title screen. ā€˜p’

Good article on KAZe’s pinball games:

Interview with KAZe director Shinichi Oguri:

From that interview, it sounds like the Lovecraft connection may have broken KAZe. Their producer/director picked it as a theme after Googling about Western horror stuff, because they wanted to expand their Western audience, seeing pinball as being more popular in the West–and they went big, spending as much on the Dream Theater soundtrack alone as they would have on an entire game’s production

–but from the way they talk about it in the interview it sounds like they didn’t really understand the theme, and it appears to have been a profound miscalculation as that game was NOT picked up for publication in the West, unlike Last Gladiators. Lead programmer Kunihito Hiramatsu and designer/director Takashi Kobayashi left, KAZe had just one new game out in the next two years–a licensed game–and after that it was nearly all licensed stuff; not even another try at a pinball game (and a licensed one at that) for six years.

I’ve had Pigs in Space for the Atari 2600 next to my ā€œcouchā€ for a month and still haven’t played it.

John Petrucci of Dream Theater only composed two songs for Necronomicon and the rest are just DT-inspired. It would be fascinating to know what massive fuckup caused that to cost as much as the rest of the game.

Oh I dunno, I would guess DT doesn’t work cheap but KAZe usually did.
