Games that should have upended the world

I honestly don’t know how to enjoy Jason Rohrer’s games. Every one I’ve played just exudes this like self-important smarmy attitude. I will admit this is sort of a rash opinion and I haven’t really tried to interact with them very critically but I’m like turned off immediately by them.

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts should have spawned a whole subgenre of vehicle-building platforming games. Instead, everyone hated it because it wasn’t exactly the same as previous games with the same name.

Dragon Quarter should be the world’s sacred cow.

Yeah if we’re not careful this will just be an sb sacred cow list thread

God Hand should’ve changed 3d action
Spartan should have changed musou
And so forth

Cordial Minuet is honestly much better than any of his other work from a mechanical POV, it’s remarkable

Dragon Quarter deserves a remake, I’m just not sure if they could tighten it up as much as it deserves to be tightened up, it was both ahead of its time and kind of clunky for what it was

that ds diamond trading game is cool, i’d like to play it more

the rohrer game

i can’t remember what it’s called and i’m playing christmas familytime board games

Panzer Dragoon Saga is touted as one of the best JRPGs ever. And yet, we’ve yet to see another rail-shooter RPG. Hint hint, Nintendo?

A light-run RPG in the same vein could also work.

The dearth of rail-shooters in the indie scene is a thing that always perplexes me, you’d think there’d be Panzer Dragoon and Star Fox clones in far greater numbers (or at all! I really can’t think of any prominent examples).

I’d call Thumper a rail shooter, Superhot too

yeah, superhot definitely is

In its original PC version it is definitely not.

does sid meier’s alpha centauri fit for this thread? i mean i suppose you have the various paradox games. haven’t played stellaris but i imagine that’s the closest the world has come since.

simcopter hit a beautiful sweet spot of funny, charming, well-playing, lo-fi, and “alive without the player” and i don’t think that note was ever really struck in the same way again

I adore this game. I got it when we first moved to Seattle. It’s like surreal animal crossing. The stuff you put down could also be played as a song, each thing playing a different instrument and its position determining the pitch IIRC.

I ended up exploring the neighborhood thanks to this game

Ledoliel is about diplomacy with alien lifeforms. It’s proof that games about social interaction don’t need to come through Facade-esque, experimental AI but actually through simple game design.

Its innovation coupled with the success of Telltale’s stuff has stumped me on why so few developers are trying out new conversation mechanics.

I played Cordial Minuet nearly only on specific days to get one of these real world amulets Rohrer created for the game, and I failed miserably

Game is busted without the amulets IMO

Rohrer made a big deal out of never putting the Castle Doctrine on sale, so the multiplayer could thrive for a long time. Instead it was dead in 2 months and then never revived.
I think he’s trying to do something re: vidcons and money, but it’s not very clear what and he’s not extremely successful

i guess it’s kind of superseded by niantic style gps games (e.g. pokemon go), but treasure world felt a lot more intimate and personal
