i finished otokonoko fishing after finding out you can in fact use consumables and this is how you tank the unavoidable damage when taking on the last fish, a dunkleosteus. cutting it up you find your missing big brother in a wedding dress with all the fanfare of a gacha game ssr pull. amazing. anyway, from all the fishing games i’ve played (this and legend of the river king) you always need to have a sibling in trouble who can only be saved by catching the baddest fish around right? is that how fishing adventures work?

i don’t think this game is all that good, but like
i think i stuck with it for the “bit” and because i can forgive a lot when putting boys in dresses. sorry. just how it is

Finished The Saboteur. It was pretty ok. Overall an interesting and mostly worthwhile game. Much more cinematic and better written than GTA but that isn’t exactly saying much. The protagonist is really dumb though.

I think the game’s choice of 2 weapons and limited ammo is what keeps the gunplay generally interesting - my main complaint is you can’t really make a loadout before starting a mission. You can totally go to a base to outfit yourself but it’s really inconvenient. You could call in re-enforcement squads but I never did either. There is like a whole tech tree in the game that I didn’t really engage with because your base starting point can get you through most of the game and little additions don’t really make much of a difference.

A lot of the cars in the game are old-timey race cars, like they’re over represented despite civilian cars taking up most of the vehicles you see on the road. The vehicles all have a problem where on certain slopes they thrash between gears because it’s going fast enough to upshift but slows down enough to downshift. Their center of gravity seems to be the center of the earth the way that they never tip over. All these are problems I’m very familiar with. The camera also pre-tilts up and down when you go up and down hills so you can see where you’re going, roughly.

This game also has some very good junky cars lmao. There’s several variations that are beat up and hauling a bunch of luggage and boxes on them and it’s such a good touch.

I do think the best missions are where you’re clambering on rooftops and shooting dudes, but a lot of them are 3rd person cover shooter fests. Cliffy B probably ruined a whole generation of games that had to have a little bit of Gears of War in them.

Anyway, tanks should be easier to hijack, there should have been a few tank rampage side missions or something. The sheer amount of nazi infrastructure there is to blow up is overwhelming so the odd watchtowers I take out never feels like it makes a dent in things.

Well that’s it! Videogame!

Do they do anything noteworthy with the protagonist’s Irish identity or is it just kinda set-dressing? Was always morbidly curious about it because of his bad fake accent

he has some interesting conversations with an English priest about England vs Ireland. and a bunch of British spies where it’s clear he doesn’t like them. They don’t do much else.

just finished a short adventure game on the spectrum based on the cabinet of dr caligari, the 1920 german expressionist film. video games can be about anything.

More FF1 pixel remaster with boosts because I don’t have unlimited time to grind out levels and gold. A lot of this game feels inscrutable without a guide. No wonder I never got past the chaos shrine when I was a child in the early nineties.

Steam kept pushing this game called Drive Beyond Horizions and by all appearances it seems to be “The Long Drive, but made in Unreal” and I’m a bit let down at how much of a straight adaptation it is of The Long Drive, which has some neat ideas, but doesn’t really add any of it’s own. The main selling point is that it’s The Long Drive but the physics aren’t wonky, so you can put physics objects in the trunk and they won’t glitch out, things of that nature. There’s also 4 player co-op which might be interesting? For some streamers maybe.

After getting the starter car running I found a Nissan Skyline and got that running, and basically drove from one building to the next, and was really bored. There’s zombies in the game but they aren’t really a threat. There’s meters for hunger, drink, and piss, and they don’t really add anything to the game. There was one time I was really “thirsty” in game and found a can of pop in the middle of nowhere by a billboard but that was kind of weird. You can get vessels of water but you can’t drink any - it’s for the car’s radiator.

You can get a backpack but it isn’t clear how to add stuff to that or if you can or if it’s cosmetic. The player character is really ugly - maybe they’re so dedicated to recreating The Long Drive they had to make them ugly as a meme or whatever.

Car parts you can mix and match, but they are required to be on the car for it to function. Like if you don’t have a brake pedal your car just does not have brakes, if you don’t have a shifter the car will be stuck in first gear. Generally there’s enough scattered parts to make one functional car, but IDK if that adds anything to the game.

The game looks great! The world generation is way better than The Long Drive, except I would say The Long Drive’s starkness and longer draw distance gives the game a different feel. It has a generic Unreal 5 look to it, which isn’t anything actually spectacular or whatever?

I want to like this game but the entire time I played it i’m like “what if
I refunded it, there’s nothing really new here” and judging by the roadmap all they’re going to add is new points of interest and cars and scenarios, but that’s really it so
who knows? The game has one scenario right now which is “kill the aliens and discover the truth” which
alright. Maybe I’ll check that out.

What do I want out of a road survival game? Towns. Better systems to get you to drive from A to B. IDK. There are a few other games like this on Steam and instead of taking the idea of Unlimited Terrain + Driving mechanics + Survival systems and running with it the game is just “tack goofy shit on your car + memes”

With The Long Drive it takes a bit of luck to put together an actual car with stuff and be able to drive a considerable distance because resources are scarce and you have to transfer fluids carefully using a siphon, and if you tip over containers the fluid falls out. This leads to lots of scavenging for gas in huge tankers that have mysteriously run aground and hoarding stuff in your trunk.

So yeah, IDK if I have a real point here. Wishing developers would discover graphics don’t actually make a better game but the game has a ton of steam reviews and therefore sales, and seems to be positioning themselves as streamer bait so who’s to say.

Kameo Elements of Power has some of the most explicitly rendered holes I’ve seen in Video Games.

Dev who made Make Ten last year released a deluxe version with 30-some often bizarre variants, even the free browser demo version has some utterly kooky ones like “Make 42”. Was probably my favorite time waster from last year.

Pokénotes:
this was the first time in like a fuckin decade that ive done a vanilla playthrough of Blue, which was not only my childhood First Pokémon Game but also My First JRPG! i remember seeing maps of Mt. Moon in Nintendo Power after watching the anime and wondering where the heck all the Pokemon appear or how battles feasibly take place in them, cuz the concept of a random encounter was foreign to me

it is an enjoyably plain JRPG, like an early Dragon Quest or FF level of simple resource and party management. the MOTHER influence is more blatant to me than it’s ever been. Khan has some great posts about generation 1 in a past iteration of this thread that i had in mind while playing, i specifically recalled his point that TMs and moves in this generation are akin to finding a slightly better sword or piece of armor, which tracks with how incredibly barren the move learnsets are in this gen. The only TMs you can just buy are self-damaging moves like Double Edge or stat boosts like Reflect/Double Team. which tbf having Double Team on most of your guys is a pretty winning strategy; accuracy/evasion is really punishing thanks to the one PokĂ©mon at a time turn economy and seems especially busted here

but of course it’s far from the only thing busted this generation heheh. My ridiculous inflated wallet (nicenice64) is of course courtesy of the MISSINGNO. dupe glitch, which i use more out of tradition than necessity. (I actually sequence broke this time around, heading for Fuschia City ASAP to collect Surf and going south from Pallet Town to unlock Cinnabar on my flight list. real heads know) but there are ways these games are broken i wasn’t even aware of until this playthrough. Like did you know that every other badge in this generation gives you a whooping +12.5% to a stat? that’s why your monsters can be 10-15 levels lower than the Elite Four and still be competetive. BUT ALSO, every time your stats are buffed OR debuffed in battle, the badge buffs are reapplied cuz they are of course glitched to hell. also the badges don’t actually boost the stats the gym leaders say, cuz of course they don’t. Oh Game Freak, i love you guys

to give myself a little extra challenge i avoided using any of my favorites from previous playthroughs (Sandslash, Persian, and the Char-line were in 90% of my champion teams when i routinely replayed the game in my 20s). i also avoided having a psychic-type, since you can basically solo the game with a Kadabra (not even an Alakazam). I also changed my team around in general A LOT trying to keep at least 1-2 PokĂ©mon who still had evolutions & moves in the party. This is a lot closer to how i traditionally play SMT than PokĂ©mon, where my team tends to coalesce early on and stay consistent. and it ended up being a really fun way to replay, though my ridiculous inflated hour count came from a lil bit of fast-forward grinding at a few points (it’s really not that necessary though, you get so much more EXP from battling trainers and there are SO MANY trainers in this game lol, presumably to balance out the fact that you can’t rematch anyone except the Elite Four)

so at age 34-going-on-35 i have finally completed Pokémon Blue Version with all three starters lol

note that while i pushed for my Dragonair REALLY hard i still didnt get a fully evolved Dragonite until after i’d caught Mewtwo

Pokemon Blue_1746794246000

OF COURSE my PokĂ©mon journey doesn’t stop here. I’ve been itching to replay Crystal for a long time. and ive just discovered that the mobile emulator im using lets me trade WITH MYSELF so rest assured that Sweetpea the Dragonite will see the light of a Johto sky

in fact

with this knowledge it might be kinda fun to use Red Version as a New Game+ of sorts

After buying it on release day and playing it off and on without any serious hiatus since then, I just finished Elden Ring
lol. I did do Erdtree too, to be fair.

Who was it here who described that game as “too much cake”? They were right. Great game on the whole, but I hope they do something more tight and focused next time.

Now that I’ve finished it, I want to watch a lore video, but this game is so long even the lore videos are hours long! That Ranni questline and ending was sick though, I want to know what her deal was.

The last couple days I thought it was just because I was distracted and missing clues, but I think Mario’s Picross might have finally ventured into Battleship territory at last half way through the star batch.

I guess it makes the ticking clock a bit more immediate if you know you’ve got to potentially cash in six or eight minutes on a coin flip that doesn’t go in your favor.

I also played Elden Ring recently (although I started and finished in like 2 months or something lol) but if you check the thread someone linked me a series of these archaeology videos that are really incredible on like deep backstory suggested by architecture, geography etc. If you want a more surface-level read of all the characters and their interrelations I guess VaatiVidya is that guy (but, spoilers, it’s aliens).
