The most important thing for a beginner picking a dq is to go for the gameboy/ds version if possible. They make it smoother and easier in a very nice way. That being said I recommend 1 for gbc. Or if you pick a later one, it’s easy to go back to the old ones because they are all very modern and entertaining, unlike say, final fantasy.

I’d recommend the following DQ play order to really get the most out of the series:

  1. Dragon Quest 1
  2. Mother
  3. Mother 2
  4. Mother 3
  5. Undertale
  6. Delta Rune

A more serious answer: if you want to get on board the hype train and play the new one, DQ11 is actually a perfect place to start.

I’ve been playing this game off an on, and I got the Magic Key last night. I’ve seen those doors everywhere, but I’ve seen relatively few Final Key doors.

It’s probably been said earlier in this thread, but it’s strange how devoted this game is to those nostalgic monster designs, including the exact poses. (Some of them looked better as NES sprites.)

The small details, architectural structures, large towns, and unique designs in this game are pretty impressive, even if the overall look of the game sometimes comes off as kind of garish to me.

I guess it’s because it’s a modern video game that has to hold the attention of an audience that is accustomed to constant stimulation, but they really throw a lot at you. Unless I’m playing through the game more quickly than intended, which I doubt. I switch out equipment constantly, often several times on a character I haven’t even pulled out of the wagon in the meantime. (Is there an implied wagon? I’m not sure. And does everyone share the horse or the monster that you mount? Do most of them sleep on the floor when you stay in an “inn” that’s just a small bed in a cabin or cave?) In previous games, I remember saving up forever to get a weapon or armor piece and then using it for a long time. That has not been my experience so far with this game.

Gaining levels in the earlier games was a big deal, since you’d just get a few random stats. This game almost might as well not show the numbers, since they all go up significantly every time.

I once ordered a fansub VHS tape of the Dragon Warrior anime. I think it was from that one Usenet seller who put everything on purple tapes that were surplus, originally intended for children’s shows. I remember that show not being very good, but I don’t remember the story at all.

i am getting back into this after putting it down for a week or so

the postgame situation is just… so much of a video game. it’s great. i appreciate the way the game just arbitrarily stops giving you very obvious signposts about where exactly you need to go to complete certain quests, like the whole main quest / side quest / random environmental storytelling divide just kind of falls apart. it would have been cool for the whole game to be like that but i kind of understand why it wasn’t . i think i’m about to run out of stuff to do that doesn’t require me to just like grind for ages, and sort of wish the grinding itself wasn’t such a drag.

if you set stuff up right, you can get to level 99 in like 1 hour

Yeah it only takes a bit of prep work to get the skill setup available (and then a tad of luck to get best > okay or mild xp).

Itching to “100%” kinda strung me out my last week of DQXI but I can’t remember the last time I was that satisfied during an ending/staff roll.

My girlfriend is going to buy a PS4 in the near future and a Switch in the not quite as near future. I’ll get us DQ Builders 2 when it comes out in the West. For sure. Then we’ll play it coop. That’ll rock

The likelihood increases as your skill over the weapon’s difficulty increases, and as the temperature increases. (I may also be wrong as I haven’t looked this up, only marveled at the raw efficiency of these very simple rules and random reward schedule next to other minigames)

I could be completely wrong about this, as I never looked any specifics up either but over the course of the game I felt different types of strikes had a much higher percentage to perfect the mid yellow-gold area, if you chose them at the optimal distance from it.

Like, 3/4 times if I was familiar with how much distance each strike would reach and believed it might be close to perfect, it would be. Some kind of factor in there though, like riskier moves with dual hits and boosts or bonuses increased the likelihood.
