FUCK YEAH DRAGON QUEST (Part 1)

in other news, the mermaid sub story is a real downer huh. I even found a little guide book she made for him in her house.

Man, I just blew 2000 gold on slime quest slots in the casino without understanding at all how it works. Yikes, that shit is complicated.

I am enjoying this thread as i keep reading and then pull a Saturn RPG out of the box to play as a joke response to “playing DQXI over here” then I play it for 3 hours and think it isn’t very good.

But I am going through a lot of JRPGs this way

i enjoy not having to buy things from shopkeepers that often

honestly part of me is like ‘this game is too easy’ and the other part of me is like ‘inserting traditional rpg mechanics but then being extremely chill about not forcing anyone to use them is brilliant game design’

Same here. I liked that creating items took real time. That lend a sense of weight and reality to the process, instead of making it feel like an extra layer of menus

Plus, you unlock the instant pot as one of the treasures in the post-game, which is when you actually benefit from item crafting a lot

Can’t comment on actual playing experience but these sets all look way too spacious to me

I just found out VIII had a “post-game” and that is the least DQ thing possible. I always liked how when the credits roll, it is actually the end. I don’t recall V or IV having any post-game at all. Did VI or VII?

I mean, I am betting XI will have a post-game as well and I don’t know how I am going to feel about it then.

most of them have post-game stuff

every version of v has a bonus dungeon and super boss, same with vi and the snes remake of iii, the remakes of iv have two post-game super bosses and a recruitable character only accessible after the credits

Huh. I never knew that. I always just stop when the credits rolled, except in IX.

In this thread, booji plays his own version of DQ, apparently. Or mostly just the NES versions (which I how I played 1 through 4).

The post-game areas bosses and additional ending are really satisfying and endearing for VIII, if you haven’t seen the full bg of the hero (and wedding) it’s very worth a look.

post-game stuff in IV for DS is A+++

i feel like iv is underrated and one of the best in the series honestly

re: xi postgame there’s a lot of it, there are multiple endings and a ‘true final boss’

I think IV’s reputation has finally (deservedly) caught up, I mostly hear it talked about alongside V these days

IV (NES) was such my jam when I was a kid. Like I loved I to death for just being there, but IV was so good. I didn’t finish the DS version, but I keep meaning to at some point.

Good to know about the XI postgame stuff. I am fine with there being postgame stuff, I guess, but I just kinda always liked when things just wrapped up.

From what I’ve researched I’m most interested in playing 5, 3 and 4. Those seem to be the best older ones. I’ve played Monsters Joker, 8 and I think I tried out 5 but only played it for an hour or so. It seemed dope
