FUCK YEAH DRAGON QUEST (Part 1)

Explain why all the live streams I watched last year were people running back and forth from the casino to the inn!

The casino is only open for so many hours during the day. In the mornings people line up outside before it opens because they want to get to the luckiest slime slot machines (that slime slot machine is nuts btw, it has five pages of instructions explaining how it works).

real world modern japanese slot machines are also like this, I was pretty amused when my wife sat down to play one when we were in vegas in march and hit the “help” button and it was explaining to her how to combo and shit on page 2/13

honestly gambling probably should be a lot harder

can someone articulate ways this is better than 8 or 9? Because I found both of those a little too slow and straightforward to stick with…

I guess it’s the first big HD entry since they moved away from random encounters and went so pun heavy in the localization, which counts for a lot

Mentally I have it in the same space as spiderman right now where it’s like “you know normally I let this genre breeze on by and figure I know what I’m missing but if it’s as pleasant as that I should consider making an exception,” except I never wind up committing to those exceptions to the extent that it feels like I ought to and then I regret it

It’s a quaint crawl maybe the first ~10 hours. More satisfying numbers flying by, character interactions and environments don’t start until then - at that point having a full party (battle wise) its rhythm grows tighter while the world slowly adds more you’ll want to find and interact with. Combing and scratching itches.

Think I might’ve liked the earlier chapters in 8 and 9 more, iirc feeling you’ve covered wider ground.

Since you seem to burn through rpgs quicker than most you’d probably get there sooner, plus the game allows extreme streamlining through all things but boss battles. If you’re under leveled by not going after fights yourself though, some of em will surely stomp you.

Does most things 8/9 did mechanically just a little better. Arguably a little too easy sometimes turning rote unless you employ those difficulty tweaks, but I imagine that amps attention at a rate paired with repetiton.

Within its tropecal formula, yeah written pretty well and entertaining. Small things like your shipman (associate of Sylvano) being a pink thug mask named Dave. Party members getting their personalities gelled. Luv that stuff

I’m only a couple hours in. I’M GONNA PLAY THIS GAME FOR REAL NOW, for the next two days

the non-existent loading times alone make it feel a lot breezier than 8

that’s a good point, I could never get into PS2 Yakuza either

Only about 4 hours in but here are my definitive conclusions so far:

cons: It is fucked up and dumb that all armor doesn’t change your appearance. This is a major step back from DQ9 and bad for society in general imo.

pros: The Little Guys in this game are extremely cute. So many cute Little Guys, just running around everywhere.

Yeah, monster designs are animated incredibly

The lil’ baby squid drawing in the sand with sand decals while I, uh, beat them to death with swords

This game’s really good

I played a ton of this game today and died for the first time while fighting the spider boss. That guy is tough! I took some time to upgrade my equipment and level up a bit, but when I came back I still just barely beat him. It was a pretty great fight. I got into a situation where party members were dying left and right, and the AI-controlled new party member was barely keeping up with his revive spell. The terrain of the battle kept shifting, as I had to try and work out how to stay alive using different combinations of revived party members.

It reminded me of how fun traditional JRPG battle systems can be.

Some screens I took. I’m going to put them behind spoilers even though

I really, REALLY enjoy taking my time with this game. Exploring everything, talking to everyone, finding every little sparkly bit and bob on the map… It’s just a great experience. And sometimes it’s so gorgeous to look at that my jaw drops. Especially with the vistas and some of the monsters. That dongo drummer or what he was called was one of those examples. So lively, so vibrant, so crisp. Animated so fluidly and interestingly. Don’t know how they’re ever going to top this with XII… The style seems completely maxed out to perfection

yeah, i remember feeling pretty much the same way about viii at the time. maybe they’ll take another 15 years to figure it out!

I just could never get into 8 the way I have with this one. The load times and the Level-5-ness of 8 were very offputting to me at the time, and thankfully neither of those is here, so this is good.

there was some talk fairly recently of a remake of 3 coming next, i’ll take that

what if remake of 1 as a DLC pack for it

didn’t they release a remake of 1 (or maybe just a straight port?) on jp psn?

edit: it was apparently a freebie you got a code for when you finished dragon quest xi
