Final Fantasy XIV

I had the same issue when I started. Just try again in a little bit. It’s always a temporary thing as far as I know.

I’m not sure which MMOs you have experience with, but I came in off of current WoW, so I had to readjust my thinking at lot with how FF14 works. Thankfully FF14, in a lot of ways, is the game I was hoping WoW would have turned into.

First off FF14 is, up front, a single-player game. Each expansion of FF14 is a FF length single-player adventure. You’re playing to go through the story, not to hit the lowest level to be allowed into the next zone. The storyline characters you meet will have the same narrative place as party members in other FF games. My favorite part of the writing is when minor characters show up in multiple plot threads, or when you run into some NPC from an entire expansion ago who you haven’t needed to talk to, but who would probably have known about what you’ve been up to, and you talk to them, and they totally did know and comment on it.

Also you don’t have to worry about aiming for specific gear for your character, because the game is very free about anything with numbers on it.

I’m on Aether/Faerie and my character is named Arktos Denomolos. She’s a cat lady because Moogle wasn’t an option. Right now I’m fighting wharf rats and lady bugs outside the starting city.

Not sure what I want to focus on right now job-wise. Currently I’m an arcanist but since you can switch willy-nilly I might not stay one for long. Seeing the job/class list in the menu with the level numbers next to each makes me want to max all of them.

They know, and while this isn’t required, by Shadowbringers they kind of expect everyone to level at least one each of the tank/healer/melee attacker/ranged attacker. Keep in mind that you do get an xp bonus based on how far in level your current job is from your highest level job, so you’ll probably want to focus on one or two jobs for playing through the MSQ/Main Story Quest

mm i thought it was a flat xp bonus as long as you weren’t on your highest level class?

Could be! Any game this big with this many numbers and this many design cycles is going to employ some magical thinking.

It’s a bump. I think when you hit level 70 in a class the amount goes down a little bit compared to when you’re under level 70.

Faerie is the gay server so it’s always packed but if you try n the middle of the night you’ll almost guaranteed be able to make a char. And yes it’s absolutely worth waiting to be able to play on Faerie with the rest of us even tho cross-world stuff is possible.

armory bonus is only valid through level 70. it’s a flat 50% bonus

there’s also a ring you get from doing the hall of the novice quests that will increase XP under lvl 30 by 30%

food gives you 3% bonus

free company bonus is like 15% or something? join butts

  • Armoury Bonus (All combat classes lower-level than your highest level combat class will have a +100% EXP buff towards applicable activities until level 70, where it decreases to +50%)

In addition, some servers with low populations are designated as “Preferred”, providing a passive buff called “The Road to 70” while on any class below level 70. This buff doubles all experience earned AFTER applying the appropriate bonuses.

if you play on a preferred server on Aether you can still do stuff with us Faerie kids! if it’s really hard to get in

yeah in the long term the free company is going to do you way more good than the preferred XP bonus, reduced rates alone saves you a fuckin pile of gil

yeah good point!

btw if anyone wants to use my recruitment code we get stuff if you pay for a subscription. the first month of subscription will get you a hat that boosts your EXP gained by 25% for characters under level 25!

ohhhh, /playtime is a command in this game.

i’m trying some kind of free trial

am i locked into my choice of data center forever or is it just that you can’t move characters between data centres but you can still make a new character on a different data centre?

also i’m european so is it annoying to play over on the US servers due to lag, etc?

you can switch data centers and worlds but it costs like 20 dollars or something and you can’t always transfer to places, it depends on server population. we have people playing on faerie in australia and shit and it seems pretty ok so it might be ok-ish from europe?
