Final Fantasy 7: The Original, The Remake, The Legacy

The high five bits with Aerith were surprisingly emotionally impactful. Love it.

also this game has already made me cry and idk if it’s just because of existing outside circumstances or what but I’m not complaining

every single trailer for this game has made me cry, even before I played through midgar for the first time last summer. I think it’s the music’s fault

Disappointed this turned out to be a cover, frankly.

I still think both this and doom look terrible, and I’ll never play half life. the 90s are dead

I haven’t played because I’m pleased enough to just watch it. I also have this aversion to games that try to hard to make me look cool with out actually asking me to learn how to play cool. It looks like I would prefer it to BatCreed combat but its still in a neighboring design zone.

I like the idea this is kinda like the Eva Rebuild movies in that this might be like some kind of recycled world and the ghosts are the old nerds going “THAT’S NOT HOW THAT GOES!” but isn’t as hateful of the audience that the Rebuilds are.

I also like the idea this might all be a dream for cloud as he’s stuck in the lifestream and the whole game is going to be framed like this until it gets to the part where he wakes up and Rejects Instrumentality

The ending was more convoluted than I would’ve liked but I get the need to have a true Final Boss even if it’s just Part 1. Overall though I thought it was great, very pleasantly surprised.

Yup it’s faithful to the original

I just got it. I’m enjoying it a lot despite the really weird decision to make it a Megaman Legends remake instead

been thinking about the soundtrack. it’s definitely not as good as the original insofar as instrumentation, but in some ways, the upgrade in actual technology, visually, kind of makes up for the lack of synthesizers in the actual music (which i think conveyed “techno” in a way the original game couldn’t entirely on its own).

some tracks sound fine, but others have lost their punch. i do kind of enjoy when the arrangement of a song is different enough so that when the main melody kicks in, i’m like "oohhhh it’s that song.

just left the church with Aerith and taking a break for the night.

the soundtrack is definitely up and down (a few of the alternate versions have made me giggle a bit) but the music in wall market really won me over. i thought the way they mix different versions of the same song together like you’re hearing a clash of music blaring out from every stall was really clever

Shiva will not stop kicking my ass!!

On a more serious note, I can’t tell which attacks I can dodge, which I should guard, and which ones I should just power through. This was mentioned here before in the thread I think, but it seems like a game that you’re gonna take damage no matter what, which is OK for RPGs, but feels weird on an action game, which mostly operates on the premise that any damage is punishment, and a skilled enough player can avoid any damage altogether. This being a weird mix of RPG and Action, and by having so many options with regards to damage (powering through by out-damaging your opponent, trying to stagger them before they can attack, guarding, dodging), I can’t properly understand when I should be using each option. I tried figuring out the right timing to dodge the Guard Dogs’ attacks but it seems like they bite me anyway regardless of how much I try getting in that Sick Dark Souls Dodge Roll timing right. I just wanna feel that action game satisfaction of feeling like I’m understanding and working towards totally nailing a game’s mechanics right and this game won’t give it to me!!

that fight is actually really good! I beat it my first try but it took everything I had.

as long as you have fira + ifrit + enough ethers and max potions and you interrupt her at the right times it’s very doable

don’t take her on alone, also equip armlets that boost magic defense

Yeah it was a really great fight. I was defeated a bunch, but it made me learn a lot of stuff I didn’t understand before. By the end of it I was really pushing Shiva around, but she still managed to nearly defeat me with her finisher move. Ifrit did her in first :sunglasses:

using assess helps a lot with this, but on some level you just have to read enemy tells. you take damage even while blocking but the advantage is that it doesn’t interrupt your combos you get ATB much faster. I still struggle with blocking against certain enemies but I believe this is entirely deliberate

the steadfast block materia when maxed out makes a massive difference and you can just guard when in doubt

also recommend magnify + barrier for boss fights

my main issue with the combat right now is how frequently i see the ai standing around doing nothing
