going to blur a lot of this post: going back to sector 7 after the plate falls is some pretty harrowing stuff, tbh. i was wondering out loud how much of this remake took cues from 9/11. i was going to say that the imagery of sifting through rubble looking for survivors would probably be closer to the 2011 touhoku tsunami/earthquake at first, given where the game was made. but then the plate falling is blamed on the actions of a foreign country, with the implication of going to war for the purposes of profit, so uh, yeah. this game is going in a direction and i’m not sure what the destination is.
I really want a restranslation of VII, especially after watching those Tim Rogers videos.
So far in the remake Aerith and I think Barret have used the word “mosey” but not Cloud and it’s bugging me.
i highly recommend emulating the psx version and using this mod which ports the 2015 fan retranslation of the steam version to psx
mm, i hadn’t really considered that. is it that much of an improvement?
it is an enormous improvement. as close to necessary as you can get for a retranslation imo!
I was telling myself that scene wouldn’t have an impact on me like the eerie original that imprinted itself on my brain for 20 years as one of the few bits I remembered about the game but this version of it surprised me with its scope, even though it didn’t have the touches of subtle offputting-ness that stuck with me (opera music, the MIDI or synth screaming to avoid using VA)
finally got my copy of this today; i cried a little bit during the opening cutscene!
i’m really liking the game so far and i’m also enjoying the English voice cast more than i thought i would. this feels like it’s own thing, but it’s also FFVII. idk, it’s quite the accomplishment! also, holy geez, what a gorgeous-looking game. when you step outside of Cloud’s apartment and it’s daylight out and you get the full view from his room of the city, it really…gave me that feeling of when you’re in a new city and you’re taking everything in all at once in a panorama?
I think it is adorable how enthusiastic this game wants the player to feel about successfully flipping a couple switches. “yes, go team!!”
I fucked that part up so many times, could not understand the timing
I started fucking up on purpose because the failure banter was v funny
the French dub still calls her aeris ahahaha
I thought I misheard them during their first dialogue earlier this morning but it’s v clear
the nation of Houellebecq will not accept change so easily
There’s something really excessive about the way the characters are animated during conversation. Almost nobody can start talking without raising a finger, wiping the air, giving a placating gesture, and putting their hand out, all in rapid succession. I can’t follow any of the conversations because I keep expecting somebody to announce they’ve just developed MSL for the hearing impaired.
They call that, anime, I think
exactly, and I love them for it!
This game looks so good, sounds so good (they used a FF7 AC-rendition of an original FF7 bgm ever so subtle, which nevertheless made me stop and listen) , and i feel like the eco-plot might be just the right thing in the current climate (literally… ) to make this game (if there’ll really be more than just one title: this series) a blip on the radar of not just us old grumpy JRPG-Tellahs, but also the young novice Cecils and Rosas.
a thought that somehow, in a weird way, makes me kinda glad?
… and i guess it is time to give SQEX some kudos for doing the boring, yet daring, thing to drag this corpse back from the deathbed, phoenix down the shit out of it to glorious one winged angel metal fanfare in the second decade of the 21st century, no less.
Not sure about pandering as such but having to re-learn her name again after most video game magazines had her down as Aerith before release and again now (in reverse) kicks the part of me that has trouble with media products and false memories in our Post George Lucas, Han Shot First world
hahah they play boss music during the stairs
How is the port of the original Final Fantasy 7 on PS4?
I think it’s the same as the Steam and/or mobile version so it is “higher fidelity” but ends up looking worse
The high five bits with Aerith were surprisingly emotionally impactful. Love it.
yeee I’m so glad
also seconding using the fan retranslation. improves the game dramatically!
