Fatigued Souls

It would be a really compelling pitch to remake it with an even lower budget than the original.

I don’t have a horse in this race. I thought it would be interesting to mention that all I’ve heard about the remake outside of the forum was immensely positive. Imagine my surprise when I found out what the real soulsheads of sb think!

I mean personally having never played the original I’d probably play it over the remake because the latter doesn’t add anything new anyway. It’s not a Yakuza/Kiwami situation where I’d rather play the updated thing. I always found Demon’s Souls interesting and maybe I’ll still play it. The remake looks next-gen pretty to me at first glance without getting into atmosphere and artistic merit and that’s nice and all but that’s not what interested me in the first place. So, original: interesting, remake: meh?, for me.

as long as any scarcity defines human commercial behavior I have a hard time judging any derivative work to be as valuable as something new

idk i just think there’s a big division between the ā€œgit gudā€ grandad mask pvp souls fans (who probably love this) and folks who like them for their novel approach to a moody dungeon crawler, unique aesthetic sensibilities and that special From weirdness

besides no remake is ever going to capture my True Demon’s Souls: importing the confusing Asia region English translation and playing it on a 20" CRT while you and the one other person you know who’s even heard of it try to make sense of this big mess like its the 90s again and videogames are still this weird secret ritual. your roommate starts hiding ā€œThis is harsh. Evaluate Me.ā€ post-its throughout the house and you don’t find them all for weeks

can’t go home to boletaria again~

Despite what I said earlier about preferring the new presentation, I just heard someone say ā€œBluepoint is the M2 of modern gamesā€ and that pissed me off

there’s a lot more art in Demon’s Souls than a standard-def CRT can show, I think what you really need are deep blacks and cheap LCDs could never do it right. plasmas, that’s the way to go

i get what you mean, but i just like the mood. demon’s feels to me like a kind of direct continuation of ps2 gaming, more-so than the sequels.

also i’ve played at least half my runs during a time when my ps3 was set up to a big crt right next to my bed, so there’s that :woman_shrugging:

Yeah, that’s the line I’d like to draw, but I think it goes on the other side. I think Demon’s is a huge design shift away from King’s Field and Shadow Tower. It’s a mid-period PS3 game; it’s deeply networked in a way impossible on earlier systems; combat and movement are animation-driven in a very different way from the perfunctory anims operating as a thin slip over spreadsheet attack values you saw in King’s Field IV. It’s so complete that all the Souls games since are only incremental changes; Sekiro is really the first new game since.

I originally played Dark Souls on a 1080i Sony CRT with wonky geometry and I’ve been chasing that dragon via flatscreen picture settings ever since
