Fading Brakelight Obscurity II - Championship Edition (Part 1)

I liken Martini liveries to a painting, and make it a point to add that it takes a proper canvas to complement the paintscheme/these colors, i.e. some instances are better fit to become a piece of art, where others fail, best example is this take here:

… just … no.

Interesting, the new Si has a little less HP than the last gen and doesn’t come in a hatch? The Si has always occupied an interesting space but I don’t see Honda’s vision here. It doesn’t seem to have an identity that makes sense to me. It doesn’t bridge the gap to the Type-R like the WRX does to the STI and it’s too “fun” to be taken seriously as a refined sedan and too plain-looking to be considered a true driver’s car? You get a limited-slip differential and rev matching, which is nice but I’m a little disappointed with this. I’ll wait until reviews filter online but I’m scratching my head a little here. Also thought there might be an automatic version but I guess not.

Maybe it’s hitting a fuel economy or insurance threshold under which ownership is more affordable than e.g. a WRX?

Is this turbo’d? I couldn’t find an actual spec sheet anywhere. A 6500RPM redline in an Si makes me kinda sad. And I guess I can assume that means it’s definitely got a turbo.

I know the K20 VTEC motors had no low end torque, but they were really fun to wring out to 8000 in the 8th gen.

I feel like Honda made the best small NA motors in the business, but I understand why everything is moving to forced induction.

Edit: Ok yeah still has the 1.5 turbo.

Interesting stance considering its a Subaru engineered car that’s just been re-badged as a Toyota right? Not trying to be combative but just curious is all.

Co-engineered, but boxer engine because Toyota doesn’t have anything appropriate.

Ah I see, thank you

The boxster block, pistons, crank is subaru but apparently toyota provided the direct injection system.
Yamaha did the head design like almost every other head from japan.
Toyota did the ECU and electronics.
Chassis design is subaru.
Toyota did the steering by modifying a lexus IS250’s.
Word is a lot of the parts in the interior and the drive train are toyota suppliers while the external bits are subaru.
Ironically the FRS badge has a subaru stamp on the back side.

I don’t see it as combative at all :). I feel like the only way most companies can produce attainable enthusiast cars these days is through collaboration.

I think Tsuchiya’s point here is that all the enthusiasts who pine for the good old days have options like this around that will eventually be all but extinct, and pissing on them only accelerates that process.

Or it’s a bad translation. It is cool that the GT86 can have such a low hood line because of the boxer layout. Definitely a car on my “if I wreck the Miata” list.

Watched that GR86 x DK special, he’s really hung up on kids gettin their hands on a used GT86, deserves respect to be bringing this up when it usually is overseen in the ytube ‘OMG shiny new!’ review-style.
