F██kin’ MR. DRILLER

4:15 time with 1 death. I should be able to get a pretty fast perfect run if I play this enough.

shit, that’s fast. did you get every capsule?

Yeah, every capsule!

I forgot how good this music was. Player piano into trash can drums is a beautiful transition.

I had a 4:16 run where my first death was AFTER I picked up the literal final capsule ughhh

really sweating trying to do all these timesaving strats without getting crushed due to driller’s hubris

Yeah, you can really dig yourself into a hole.

general strategy for those who wish to compete:

biggest scoring factors

  • number of air capsules–each air capsule after the first yields an additional 100 points
  • remaining lives–each is worth 30,000 after a clear
  • time to complete–haven’t figured out what time is worth but it’s better to finish the level faster than to dig many blocks it seems

how to save time

  • freefalling is the fastest way to move downwards, so prioritizing digging tall blocks to create a chute is faster than digging downward multiple times
  • there is no movement penalty for digging sideways, whereas digging downward requires you to land and stand still no matter how precisely you can time it
  • jumping up takes about a half second, waiting for an air capsule to fall takes even longer than that. the optimal way to get an air capsule is to dig sideways and walk into it
  • the breather level is a luxury, but waiting for the level to chain itself still takes longer than freefalling through as much of it as you can, so try and land into the air capsules quickly and keep falling

It’s not purely about speed but I don’t quite understand some of the scoring nuances yet. I got all the capsules this run but it’s still fewer points than @slime’s run. I was testing a strategy where I sometimes drilled through X blocks (I think thrice this run). I don’t think drilling them loses you points directly, but maybe staying on the screen less time got me less block clears, which did end up mattering for the score?

EDIT: yeah, just tested. Drilling X blocks gets you 10 points (like a normal single block) and it doesn’t break your capsule combo. I guess it’s worth sticking around a bit longer to get block clear points in some cases, unless someone else notices a way that drilling X blocks directly loses you score.

You’re all fucked once I finish reading this using the google translate app

Yeah, I’ve had many cases where I drill an X block to save time for an air capsule, but if possible I try to take a group of two or three X blocks down with me as I descend so that I can use it to crack open a capsule. The act of chaining them is slower but I think it’s worth significantly more points, though I’m unsure of the exact values since it’s hard to keep track of the score counter in a run

I realized that I own this…

…and that Mr. Driller is on this.

Then I saw the scores here and went “oh, well maybe not”.

do it!! dig a chance!!

okay, so chain values are pretty easy.
each block manually popped is 10 points per tile, and that value is tripled if it was popped due to a chain reaction

for example:
chain example

popping the yellow here is worth 20 points, and the blue tiles colliding are worth 50x3, so the chain gives me 170 points total. the values are the same for X blocks. sometimes you’ll find an undergrounder inside of a block and it’ll give you a flat 765 points

I think the speed strat is still the best, but going out of my way to pop the biggest blocks while also intentionally leaving room to start a chain has been a good habit

honestly I think I’m conditioned to just see puyo chains everywhere

Comparing my score to @aislesgrises, I see air capsules are the priority for getting that boost into 300 thousand.
