Watching La Collectionneuse was sort of a paradigm shifter for my Rohmer memories. I think I was so young that I saw the men of Claire’s Knee and Love in the Afternoon and reasoned they seemed weird because they were adults and therefore outside of my understanding. Now, watching a Rohmer Man as an Adult, I can see they’re weird because they’re fucking weird. They suck. They’re awful. If anything when I was thirteen I probably saw them reflect a similar level of emotional maturity back at me. Maybe this is what arrested me, then. idk. Pretty good movie anyway.

For the past three Fridays, I have been streaming Rohmer films. Let me tell you, he does not run out of shitty men. He must have a journal full of new guys to hate. It has been interesting to see him transition from writing confessional narration to confessional dialogue. All these guys want to explain themselves in a way that proves they have done nothing wrong, but really they just damn themselves all the more.
His sense of humor is impeccable. I was not expecting to straight up guffaw at so many points.
There is only one moral tale remaining. I wonder what wisdom our protagonist will cultivate this time.
BTW @Tulpa , the actor who played Perceval showed up in Claire’s Knee playing his part perfectly.
One of my favourite aspects of his films is that he lets his characters be wrong and stupid without making a big show of it. It’s much funnier this way. They’re funny movies, they’re almost all comedies in the most straightforward sense!
local theater that does 35mm rep screenings is showing La Collectionneuse soon, their blurb about it says “You don’t turn to Rohmer for lols”. bullshit!
I have loled at almost every one of his films!
Rohmer club returned last night for one of Eric’s most idiosyncratic films, Perceval. I saw this two years ago. It was my first and only Rohmer film.
I had forgotten how long it was.
As difficult it was for me to stay awake–and there’s a much bigger reason for my sleepiness–I adore this film. It has a rotating cast playing multiple roles, including a chorus. The sets look like Playmobil castles. Even with all the stylistic changes, it manages to stay true to Rohmerian themes. There is a man who sucks, unsexy sexual situations, and a aura of Catholicity. It is also French.
I want to thank @HOBO for being so generous and letting me take up Friday nights. I hope people have enjoyed these as much as I have.
I implore anyone who liked Perceval or even The Marquise of O to watch one of the best films of the 00s
This sounds blue-hot.

I’m in love with how that movie looked, it was fuckin’ hypnotic, I am def watching it again, I don’t care how long it is!! I love Rohmer Club!!
I even watched a couple of his TV spots but I missed this!
Woah, his alleged birthday is coming up on the 21st. We should watch a film together. I would selfishly choose The Green Ray but it sounds like lots of people have already seen it. Poll time:
- The Green Ray
- something else
I know everybody is wondering if I’m gonna stream anything tonight and the answer is no. I accidentally double booked tonight! Oh well, today probably isn’t even his real birthday!
