World’s most intense staring contest
While we’re here
Wonder if I would find Hotel Dusk more bearable in Japanese.
I should probably just try and read literally any Japanese pulp detective novel instead.
i haven’t read anything by this guy because i don’t know japanese and don’t think any of his crime fiction is translated into english but he seems like he could be interesting…
From what I can recall the great thrill of Hotel Dusk was always the whole Aha - Take On Me visual presentation over any kind of compelling narrative. I seem to just remember protagonist Kyle Hyde sulking about the place, knocking on doors and lighting up a cigarette at least 10 different times per conversation… Y’know, NOIR There’s always the chance that’s just my poor memory though…
On that note, I was always more taken with Another Code by the same team, although I was like 12 at the time I played it… I doubt I’d be as into anime YA Myst + DS hardware gimmick puzzle-solving all these years later. I imagine it would still be a hell of a lot more engaging than that switch remake where they binned the entire original visual identity of the thing and gave everyone really grating voice acting…
This reminds me that the writer behind these recently crowdfunded her newest project which looks a bit like if 999 was a period piece centered around the auctioning of nazi memorabilia?!
Edit: Only just discovered they ditched the original “Hitler’s Estate” subtitle and the description on steam tries to get around this pretty specific plot detail in quite a funny way:
Eighteen-year-old Noah is haunted by the memory of his mother abandoning him at a very young age.
He lives with his father Leonardo, a failed writer and eccentric obsessed with researching “Dictator X.”
Large part of the appeal of Hotel Dusk for me was the coziness of having the entire game take place in one hotel with rooms you keep revisiting, with the entire thing happening in the span of a day or so
Yeah, to be fair I do remember enjoying the dusty hotel. Strong sense of place there…
I couldn’t tolerate the extremely British localization of the sequel, it was aggressively “Oi mate let me get me torch and spanner”
where did you find that image? all the japanese boxart i can find for We Love Katamari has a giraffe on the roof:
