Very glad to hear you’re enjoying Aztec Adventure! It was one of my first games, along with Miracle World (I had the more rounded off, RF-only model 2 with it built in) and Sonic 1 SMS. It’s a very peculiar game and I remember having a lot of trouble even getting past the first level. Playing it now I can’t believe how free the flower boss is.

SupeHari and R-Type are both excellent ports for what they are, super playable. myself, I’ll throw out recs for:

  • Ninja Gaiden - far more approachable than its NES incarnations, though the boss fights are embarrassingly easy
  • Shadow Dancer - an actual port of the arcade original as opposed to the MD version!
  • Wondey Boy - get that adventure island shit outta here, this is the jam
  • Thunder Blade - the hitbox is a bit big, but still a pretty solid shmup. the Harrier-style stages are pretty brutal though
  • Bubble Bobble - VERY solid port.
  • Power Strike 1 and 2 - both Alestes, both very good.

re: the YM2413/FM Sound add-on - eh, it has its moments. The limitation of only being able to play one user-defined instrument at a time really limits it. It does give it an endearing sound all to its own, though. makes me think of turn-of-the-century phone ringtones most of the time. I much prefer SN76489/PSG only.

Just noting that the graphic here is an oil painting that I have seen in person, as I had some work in a show that was organized by the person who painted it.

ETA: He had to redo it to add different guys on the left for some reason. To be more on topic, he was a SMS guy growing up. I only got to play it at my friend’s house, I remember falling in love with Wonderboy in Monster Land, and holy crud does the cover art live up to my memories:

@HEAVYVIPER i wonder if you ever picked up on the colonialist vibes in aztec adventure. i mean it seems like you represent an explorer and the anthro animals represent… natives? that you hire?

it’s the kind of thing i wouldn’t have ever given a second thought to as a kid

now i’m curious how the manual lays this out, i mean it probably is kind of intended to be like that

the master system was fuckin’ huge in the uk when i was a very young lad. never owned one but will always have a weird nostalgia for those graph paper boxes

into the kenseiden title screen

would have been waaaay too young to have picked up on something like that, lmao. Could kinda see it now, though, especially given the JP title of “Nazca '88.” tbh it gives off more of the classic “adventurer in a strange land” vibe.

I think I still have a copy with a manual…

EDIT: SMSPower to the rescue~

Somewhere deep in the jungles of Central America is the legendary Aztec Paradise. But no one has ever been there because the only way that leads to it is through a fearsome labyrinth inhabited by mysterious Aztec demons, monsters and spirits. Only the cool and clever explorer Niño is brave enough to venture into the labyrinth … with any chance of survival!

Through one strange landscape after another, Niño presses on in search of Paradise. At every turn, enemies try to stop him. Some enemies can be bribed. Others he’ll have to fight. And at the end of each passage, he’ll have to encounter the boss Demon. Niño will have to defeat the Demon to open the gate to the next round, so he can continue on his quest.

What’s it like in Paradise? There’s only one way to find out.

Rounds

Niño’s adventure is long and hazardous. He will have to get through ten rounds, each representing a different part of the labyrinth. Each section is guarded by its own Demon.

At the end of the labyrinth is the area known as the Shadows of the Phantoms … a misty land where all the Demons are present together. It’s a scary place, and it won’t be easy for Niño to get through. But if he does, the gates of Paradise will finally open up for him.

wow here’s a nice scan:

i always liked aztec adventure’s subtitle: the golden road to paradise

despite not being very popular there, for some reason i always get more of an 80s japan “time travel” feel from the master system than i do from the famicom. maybe because it had a sukeban deka ii game, and the ms hokuto no ken game is so much better than the famicom ones? i realise this paragraph probably makes no sense to anyone except me.
also, it’s pretty amazing that a master system thread has gone on so long without mention of master of darkness

even in the mega drive’s heyday, the master system was still being heavily promoted in the uk

that stuff is all from 1993!

Took me ages to work that out as a kid, I thought that button was some important technical function like programming a VCR or something, so avoided touching it in case I got in trouble

I remember there was a Sega Master System set up in a display at an electronics store when I was a kid, and I think that was the only time I ever really got to play one of them.

The game in it was of course Rocky, so that is what I think of whenever I think of the Master System. I assume it surely had to be the best game for the system, if it wasn’t why would it be the game you put in the store display?
