i thought this was coming out next year
it’s installing now
an english dub
YEAH VERONICA GOT IT IM EXCITED TO LISTEN TO HER PLAYING IT
i dont have anything i can play it on
edit hurf i do have something to play it on! i thought their new deal with xbox meant no more yakuza on playstation ill totally get this eventually
Turning this into a real rpg slows the glacial starting pace down even more. It took me over 2 hours to get to the time skip setup. Backstory for a new protagonist is a factor here.
There are dungeons which based on the first one seem to work well enough.
Liking the combat so far. I look to be about to open up the jobs system so we’ll see how that goes. Battles are suitably fast paced. Kinda atb-ish based on initial impressions. Justifying making it turn based due to the protagonist spending his youth playing too much dragon quest is neat. Lacks the stoicism of kiryu so curious to see how this impacts the tone of sidequesting. Assume there will be some jokes about doing meaningless rpg sidequests will be a factor.
Main disappointment so far is that they don’t seem to have added in any new arcade games. Ive seen virtua fight 2, 5 and fantasy zone. Fighting vipers doesn’t seem to have made it over from Judgement. Was secretly hoping for last bronx.
Tramp version of pac man seems like a good time. I believe there is karting. Hoping for outrun 2 drifting when i get to that.
into how much they’ve gone in on dragon quest references down to fighting a hammerhood crit or miss guy at the beginning of the game
A chunky intro and a warm beverage make for a comfy game. The theming of Ichiban’s bizarre hero mentality through the combat system was neat. I feel sad for Ichiban though, he was level 4 for 15 years
Just unlocked the job system proper and I want all of these skills. They’re leaning so hard into crazy videogame logic it’s hard not to be charmed.
Probably the weirdest tonal shift of the year as well. There’s a scene at the end of Chapter 4 where your boss who is a soapland owner is found hanged from his office ceiling, apparently having committed suicide. The party reacts with horrified shock. The pun-loving localisation team thought this’d be a great opportunity to name the trophy, which subsequently unlocks immediately after this cutscene, ‘soap on a rope’.
Yeah that achievement bothered me immensely too… Someone done fucked up
I can’t believe Don Quixote is gone
Also I tried to play the slots, but seems you have to download each machine as DLC and the PS store says they don’t exist. Pretty weird but I don’t like slot machines anyway so it’s probably for the best
I downloaded them. About 10gb.
lol okay no thanks then.
I wonder if they aren’t available in my country because of weird self censorship re:gambling, although DQ games still have casinos here so it’s a bit odd
For whatever reason you can’t download them from in the game, they don’t show up. If you go to the actual PSN store you can download them there, at least that’s what worked for me. You aren’t missing anything; I spent a half hour watching the Hokuto no Ken slots run while I ate lunch and made 1/5 of the tokens I’d need for a single platinum plate.
Just got to the timeskip! Only another hour or two of slow feed tutorials and maybe I’ll be allowed to actually play the game! Hope there wasn’t anything interesting outside the main story in the first chapter because the only thing I stopped for was playing super hang on a few times. I hate playing a game while half the pause menu is greyed out
I don’t know about that! I’m in chapter 5 and I still don’t have access to the kart racing lol Everything else is there though… Sure took a while! Which is a good thing for me
If I had had access to everything in the game from the get go I’d probably have uninstalled it right away due to choice induced paralysis
I like the way this game is paced! That goes for the game systems as well as the rather slow cutscenes. It’s probably been since MGS4 that I played such a cutscenes heavy game. I used to not like them recently. This one’s got so much humanity and heart though that I’m enjoying it… It’s a very chill game
You can unlock some of the stuff like dragon kart relatively early if you explore the whole map. I know you can get it in chapter 4. I feel like part-time hero is a similar deal. If you just follow the main story beats it’s paced out fairly evenly though.
strongly recommend making some progress in the management minigame as soon as it becomes available, you recruit an optional new character a little before someone leaves the party for a while
The cutscenes are a major improvement over the PS2-3 era titles. There’s actual cinematography in most of them! The characters emote and speak at the same time! They behave somewhat like human beings. I’ve played a teeny bit before bed the last few nights and it wasn’t too dissimilar to watching an episode of a TV show. Didn’t feel like I was paying a time tax to get to the bits I actually cared about. Felt like I was having a little treat. Amazing.
My eyes usually glaze over whenever these games get to the long talk of criminal conspiracy but I am pretty sure I’ll be invested in whatever’s happening here cuz they’ve done a good job of establishing who everyone is. I didn’t give a shit about the fate of every other mustachioed patriarch’s syndicate but now I wanna find out why the ex-child actor’s doing all this scheming. I guess having novel characters helps.
Ichiban is incredibly likable and he supports sex workers and I’m somewhat expecting some Persona-style backpedaling eventually but so far this is far, far better treatment of hard times folks than I’ve seen in most big budget 21st century media. Yeah that’s faint praise but so far nothing has made my skin crawl and I have laughed a bunch and it is nice to have a game about a middle-aged dude trying to make up for lost time by forming bonds and helping folks rather than murdering everyone.
Also the battle system is fine so far. I would be ok with this becoming the norm. I think 0 is the only one where I truly enjoyed the action and even then the boss fights were a fuckin’ drag, and 6’s battles were so slight they may as well not have been there. And I was fine with that personally – I kept wishing they’d cut fights entirely cuz I just wanna play a Dad Sim – but this is very good. Turn based seems to be a better fit for this kind of pacing.
Yakuze once again the only game I like, hope they keep making these forever, hope they’re still appealing to me when I’m 70, hope all the protagonists continue to be enormous virgins.
I finally got back to Judgement after an extended break and man it is weird to feel Kamurocho being depicted so slightly differently. it’s a cool effect though.
Is anyone getting the issue where some of the real-time/in game engine cutscene dialogue lines are getting clipped short at the end? Not too big of deal esp with the jp track where my comprehension is near zero and it has kind of a weird rushed/breathless effect of people talking over each other, but found it weird as previous games in this engine didn’t do this, or at least to the extent where I noticed it was happening.
Am surprised how quick the battles turned out to be even with turns/ATB.
Cosigning that I wish they made an effort to port over another arcade game. Dragon Kart is good in that RGG series not amazing but totally functional and world/game-space-consistent way. I wish more of the management mode animations and repetitive sections could be skipped over/automated. Liked beating shareholders into submission/compliance with persuasion/apologies as RPG attacks. The TV ads you can buy are good.
