i played botw (good, but grating), mario odyssey (boring) and shmups. that’s about it. tbh any other switch game I ever wanna play I’ll just pirate and play on steam deck. same experience with a little fiddling.
oh I played a good chunk of unicorn overlord and some mario wonder doing that. unicorn was fun until it wasn’t. never got into wonder. would like to try switch shiren at some point, but I could also just buy it on steam. which is the case for pretty much every switch game that isn’t made by nintendo or an asshole japanese shmup developer
I initially bought the thing for mario maker 2 and dqxi. turns out I have zero level design skills and the wii u was the optimal interface for that kind of experience anyway. dqxi I played the whole big ass demo and then never touched the full game. turns out I got about 15 hours of DQ in me before I never wanna see it again.
I think I have over 200 games on my Switch, but because I mostly play old and/or weird games, whenever I try to show anything multiplayer to friends they always end up just wanting to play Boomerang Fu on someone else’s console instead.
I think I usually opt for getting stuff on Switch instead of PlayStation because the ease of use and portability usually wins out over framerate / graphics etc. PlayStation is for big fancy games that you play on the couch before bed.
I have a friend who always refuses to use a Pro controller or joycon grip in favour of using separate joycons with his hands dangling by his sides. Best controller ever, he says.
I got my switch pretty close to launch, on a whim (impulse buy because it was available and hard to find at the time). I had already been playing BotW for a month on WiiU, and never ended up playing it on Switch at all.
2017 was still easily my favorite year of the platform between Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade 2.
I haven’t played the switch at all in years and ended up giving mine away. Not an indictment of the platform or anything, I just barely play games at all nowadays.
here’s some switch games I actually put decent time into:
DQXI: fantastic.
Smash Ultimate: more than I’d played one of these in 15 years. pretty fun.
Mario Kart: I like that they kept making tracks for this for like 10 years.
Tears of the Kingdom: not sure I liked it as much as BotW. still pretty impressive.
Mario Maker 2: great. though it felt like they were holding back some.
Fire Emblem: I forget why this even looked ok to me but it could have been much worse.
Triangle Strategy: pretty bad. but nice that someone made such a slavish Tactics Ogre homage.
Mario Odyssey: both under and overrated. hope they have some new ideas for the next one.
Huntdown: much, much better than modern 2D shooters with this art style tend to be.
Mario Rabbids: pretty fun considering they kept putting it on sale for like $15
holding out stupid hope that silksong will be a launch title for switch too, and maybe be a different sort of platformer instead of another search action vania
Mario Odyssey couch co-op with significant other was one of the most pleasant gaming experiences I had. Stumbling over that T-Rex. This was the wildest Mario game since… GB Mario Land? I thought. Felt like they just put stuff in there because they could.
Also competing in Ring Fit. Or watching them play Animal Crossing lying in the bed. Maybe I am biased but good memories were had, would switch again.
