I bought this today on Xbox, is necromancer fun to play?
imo everyone but barbarian is a pretty breezy time. i think necro is the least mobile of all the classes if that matters to you, but you get great free ranged abilities (corpse explosion) and minions to make up for it
Cool, I played crusader in D3 and I usually go for melee so I want to try something different this time.
time for endgame pervert feelings
i’m at level 52 now in WT3. lv45-now were an awful slog where i was trying to gear my barbarian up enough to kill the capstone boss faster than he could overwhelm me with minions. my build feels good when i’ve had a bunch of trash to build up fortify + resource on but kind of clunky any other time. the barbarian right now is really bad for solo play. none of its builds really work without a full set of legendaries, i guess to compensate from having two +100% legendary effect bonuses from carrying 2 two handed weapons? boss fights are particularly challenging as you have no access to ranged damage without legendaries and every other boss sprays layered ground effects
feel like the endgame is a huge time investment for the progress you make tho? i’m not timing myself or anything but a week of casual play into a path of exile season my build is complete (~lv80) if unoptimized, i’m comfortably blasting thru mid-tier maps (nightmare dungeons) and having fun with wild endgame mechanics. here i’m still in the mid 50s with a half complete build a month out from launch. there’s a lot of dead time because of the tension between the classic diablo format and their quasi open world ambitions? having to walk all over town to do between-run chores, dungeons with objectives and step-retracing instead of just blasting monsters til a boss shows up lead to a lot of time where you’re just walking thru hallways
this is made worse by blizzard, in very blizzard fashion, locking 10 of 60 skill points behind regional reputation grinds
i might put this down until season 1 then roll a sorc or rogue lol
I bought Grim Dawn for $12 in the steam sale and 3 hours in I got a spell that makes enemies piss blood, and then every enemy their blood touches also starts pissing blood. Why did I spend $70 on Diablo 4?
I applied to the clan. My BNet id is Miskatonik#1841
Okay I beat the campaign. Pretty decent, I suppose?! I don’t feel any desire to really keep up with the postgame or seasons though, I reckon I’ve had my fill. I’ve got Zelda to go back and beat and then Baldur’s Gate 3 next month.
I did enjoy the gameplay, loot, the art direction, but the story was kind of dumb, idk. Like some of the stuff Lorath did seemed really stupid??? Commiting himself to be a tree head for eternity to find out where Lilith went… dude just ask anyone in town to point you towards the palace covered in blood. I can get there in 2 minutes. Using the sightless eye to find her again when she was literally down the hall.
Which brings me to my other gripe which is that the game made Sanctuary seem way too small. Like in Diablo 2 it seemed like you were just in a tiny part of the world, like you were spending weeks traveling between acts…in this you can zoom across Sanctuary on horseback in 10 minutes.
Open world games always do this and it’s always terrible, I hate it
This, though, is classic dark fantasy stuff imo. Always that combo of hubris, exhaustion, temptation, stupidity that means the corruption remains, the cycle goes round again…
Yeah, the story and aesthetic rarely get above anything other than like pulp fiction Frank Frazetta stuff. I really loved the final run before the boss — it reminded me of the part in D2 Act 2 where you fought in that weird orthographic MCEscher thing.
Tbh, to me Diablo 4 is a perfect example of a well made game that just isn’t weird enough. This isn’t RDR or Last of Us where it’s a prestige movie game (is it?) with excellent storytelling. It’s arcade Zelda 1 with friends.
I don’t have high hopes for the infested demons seasonal content to bring us the weird, but maybe something else will?
I’d really love seasonal content that was just three months of sludge. Force us to use weird builds because everything is weird and then flip it all over again for the next three months.

If you want to play weird builds Diablo 3 has weekly challenge rifts. Load in with a developer approved set of oddball gear and skills and then question how the hell their tester was able to hit the par time.
Oh huh that’s actually a cool idea.
the seasonal mechanic is pretty dull and the patch made my two eternal realm characters much worse, i don’t think another live service game i’ve bought has immediately lost my interest this fast lol
the only thing malignant adds are little perk rocks that you put in jewelry and take up even more of your limited inventory space because they don’t stack. you have to go out of your way to fight ““malignant”” (covered in pus but otherwise the same) mobs to get them, and they only drop after killing a rare mob, clicking on its corpse, waiting for a few seconds for a tumor to pulsate a lot, then fighting the same mob again??? it feels really transparently padded with little delays that you have to watch every time you engage with it. these rocks can’t be unsocketed either so you have to keep doing this boring shit to keep the same perk as you upgrade gear
feels like they already stripped the game to a skeleton maintenance crew and told them to design for maximizing playtime over adding anything interesting to character building or fightin monsters
I miss being excited about this game
I miss my $70. I could have bought two 10pulls in Gundam Battle Operation 2 with that.
I had a good time with friends! Was worth the $ for me.
Although both the game in general, and this season specifically, could use a lot of quality of life changes. I could see myself playing a future season if my whole fucking inventory wasn’t gems and hearts and the season vendor wasn’t a mile outside of some towns and if there was a functional UI to compare hearts and if, uh, I could swap a black heart into a slot that already has a black heart without having to dump it in my inventory first because I’m only allowed one black heart equipped at a time and if elixirs and nightmare sigils didn’t fight for the same inventory slots for some reason so I’m always having to junk both of them to get more room for random sigil drops that I probably don’t even want.
Navigating this game’s menus and UI is markedly worse than it was pre-season because of how regressive and seemingly rushed the season features are, and that all piles on the issues that were already there.
my investment will pay off
3 got good. eventually.
I don’t get how they got so good at doing season themes by in D3 from the Switch version to D4 launch and then kneecap 4 with “gems, but not”
They probably should’ve saved some better content for Season 1, but I think the base campaign was really great, so… yeah I have hopes for it to get better.
