Some people have had issues getting their subtitles to burn in with Handbrake, so here’s a guide for how to burn in subtitles in case Handbrake isn’t doing it. There’s probably a quicker, better, less convoluted way, but this is how I figured out how to do it, since using Handbrake itself to do this doesn’t ever yield burnt-in subtitles unless your MKV has the subs you want by default.
First thing’s first: when using Handbrake and burning in your subtitles, use the live video preview! If you don’t see the subtitles in the preview, then they haven’t burnt in and you fucked up!
If you need help setting up the other areas of Handbrake, I recommend notbov’s guide in this very thread. I recommend bookmarking it because it’s pretty useful to have on-hand in case you forget anything.
Anyway.
All you’re going to need for this, aside from Handbrake, is MKVToolnix GUI. This is going to allow us to generate an MKV from either a pre-existing MKV (if we want to manipulate the subtitles) or from another video format.
In this first example, we’re using The Most Terrible Time in My Life, which is just an AVI. This file didn’t have any subtitles, so we need to add them.
First, open up MKVToolNix GUI, and drag your video into the “Source files” box of the Input tab. After you’ve done this, drag your subtitle file into the same area you dragged the video file. It’s going to bring up a prompt about adding or appending files.
Just select the first option (“Add as new source files to the current multiplex settings”) and hit OK.
In the “Tracks, chapters, and tags” box, select the subtitle track you added, and on the right-hand side, under “Properties”, choose the Yes option for “Default Track” flag. You can also set the language, but it can be undefined. If you need to, you can change the Character set to whatever it needs to be. I set it to UTF-8. Since we’re only working with one audio file and one subtitle track, we don’t really need to force anything, so you shouldn’t need to fuck with it. You can also make other adjustments here, but that’s not the point of this, so you can do that on your own.
Once you’ve done everything, hit the “Start multiplexing” button at the bottom. This shouldn’t take long.
Once your MKV has been generated, play it in something and make sure your subs are showing up. They should display by default.
Now, open Handbrake.
Here, for “Track Selection Behavior”, we’ll choose “First Matching Selected Language Track”, and for “Burn-In Behavior”, we’ll select “First Track”. Click the “Save” button. These should (?) be the default options, but just check each time to be sure.
Now, click the “Preview” button, choose an area of the film you know will have dialogue, and click the “Live Preview” button. This will generate a 30 second preview of what will be output.
We’ve got burnt-in subtitles now. You can now proceed with generating your file in Handbrake.
Yo, but what if I already have an MKV, but I need to modify the subtitles for whatever reason?
You can do this with MKVToolNix, as well.
Drag your MKV into MKVToolNix. As you can see, my rip of Prince of Darkness has two audio tracks, one we don’t even need, and two subtitle tracks, neither of which are actually English. We don’t need three of these things, so we can just disable them by unchecking the checkbox.
Drag your subtitles into the Source files box and select the first option in the prompt (as seen in the tutorial for adding subtitles). In the “Tracks, chapters, and tags” box, select the subtitle track you added, and on the right-hand side, under “Properties”, choose the Yes option for “Default Track” flag. You can also set the language, but it can be undefined. If you need to, you can change the Character set. I set it to UTF-8.
Now, “Start multiplexing”. Now that you have an MKV with English subtitles, you can follow the Handbrake portion of the previous guide.
Listen! It’s October! It’s a spooky time and I bet you’re a spooky babe looking for a new cool place to haunt…
Well, guess what! I found it! It’s at https://cytu.be/r/sbanimeclub and it’s gonna be open from now until later! Way later! We walk the night, baby!

(thanks to @Closed for coming up with this great theme last minute.)
YOUTUBE WENT DOWN BUT WE’RE NOT LETTING THAT STOP US.
We’re still watching cartoons! From Eastern Europe! Where they were far more open about the human form…and the things it could do! You know what that means?
It means we gonna see some of this:
No! Not Columbo! Just some artsy fartsy stuff that’ll blow your ever lovin’ mind…stuff that’ll make you go “Wow, I didn’t know you could get into a position like that without breaking your neck!” or “Gosh, that looks nice, but in reality I bet it smells awful!”
Log on to the Wired at https://cytu.be/r/sbanimeclub and celebrate! Celebrate…not having to watch anime!
Yo anime people, can we watch this some time?
Those screenshots are incredible.
We watched it during one of a few “hey everything’s turning out cat related” Neko Nights (this past spring or last year?)
And it’s pretty great. Extremely screencapable. I think there’s a handful of things that’ve had 2nd viewings by now and there’s plenty that stand to rotate, so yeah why the kat knot?
Yep, we can definitely watch catnapped again sometime, it was very fun and good
