Anyone here ever heard of the Culdcept series? Looks like a really nice balance between a board game and an RPG:
It is, as you might suspect, Japan-only, but it looks like there’s a translation project well underway for the 3DS version.

they localized one of the PS2 or 360 releases. it’s neat but pretty slow/bland
I was really into the ps2 version of the game that managed to come over. Think Monopoly meets Magic. Instead of buying property you summon a monster to hold your territory and territory comes in 5 flavors. 4 elements (wind, fire, forest and water) and neutral or rock. Monster get a health buff being on like colored squares and if a person lands on a square they either have to pay a toll or fight the monster with one of their own. Thinks get more heated once you start setting up chains and paying to change the colors of squares to create stronger chains and then there’s a stock/symbol market where you buy shares of each color type so if a player is creating a lot of fire lands you can buy fire stocks and get a cut of the value he’s creating and then cash out when you feel you can squash all his properties. It can create some fun encounters between players if you can stick through it and get into it. The dice roller in the game is pretty terrible though. A portable version with online multiplayer and room for updates has always been on my wishlist or a good pc equivalent. It was such a gut punch seeing culdcept trophies and music included in smash bros and nintendo has done nothing for it. Not even a pity release.
I played the crowd-translated DS version for a while. I compulsively played it but don’t remember much about it, other than Monopoly with Monsters.
Yeah, the 360 version was alright, but so goddamn slow that it took forever to play. That game needed a speed up button so bad.
Yeah you can check out the 360 one that got released in English. Magic + Monopoly is the most common and understandable shorthand but you quickly learn that playing the elemental stock market is just as important as those elements. It’s fun but matches are slooooooooooow. They take a while to ramp up and animations take their generous time. It’s got hardcore fans though; I think it could do decently if it got a PC version that moved a bit quicker.
Those announcers were so pleasant.
“Aim for the castle.”
“Good luck on your next journey.”
“Mana.”
In hindsight I think it’s closer to Itadaki Street + Magic, now that you mention the Elemental Stock Market. Itadaki street is a good game by the way! The PSP version has an okay translation, and portable is the way to go with these kinds of games imo
There’s always the official localization of the Wii one called Fortune Street as well. That’s also a fun series but, like Culdcept, can take forever to complete a match and you’ll usually be able to tell who’s going to win far before the official end.
The Wii version has a mode where you can tell a computer to play for you for a while. Seems like a bad way to make up for a game being really slow but…it’s there.
Fortune Street is dank af and i’ll hear naught contrariwise
Helllll yessssss
Nice! There goes another J3DS exclusive.
I never stopped believing
except when I did
I’m guessing you’re the same guy on neogaf spreading the love, huh
Oh man I will play portable Culdcept.
Whaaaa I can’t believe this is happening??
All I know about Culdcept is that it’s canon to Metal Wolf Chaos.
My first exposure to culdcept was the manga tokyopop published during their mad dash to publish anything they could. i really liked the monster designs in it and it felt like the artist went all out on the clockwork style monsters and devices. Probably my favorite manga about fighting with cards and summoning monsters.
I pre-ordered it a long time ago and forgot so it arrived today. I haven’t opened it at all because I wasn’t expecting it and am already playing other things.
Drem your avatar is a delight.
