it mist have been a wild time being an engineer back then, the amount of things they tried, never seen before, and imagine their surprise when they found out it actually worked.

otoh, the 'you get killed if it doesn't'-bit, that surely must have been in the mix as well, must have had its effect on the want for trying _something else_ in the hope for finding something worthwhile...

anyway, never heard of the Bv 141B before, that’s wild.

Mc. 202 respect+1 and approaching INT_MAX fast!

speaking of dcs here’s a fun vid of a bunch of dudes challenging themselves with a SAM evasion canyon run. valley of death!

so as expected, having looked into DCS, it’s very slim pickings for those of us that do not want to re-enact bombing brown people. There’s speculation that the Russian government prevents the devs from recreating any relatively recent Soviet/Russian aircraft, which means the vast majority of what’s out there is NATO modules, and the accompanying maps and campaigns are equally regressive. just surveying the campaign descriptions is bleak. (Syria map! Persian Gulf map! 80 variations of “re-enact the Korean War / Gulf War / Afghanistan / Iraq / Somalia / Abkhazia / Iran / etc”!). even when you go to the warbirds, all you have is Luftwaffe campaigns.

I don’t know what I expected! as @digs stated to me “you looked into the Fascism box and found fascists.” why do people buy this game?
guess i’ll be sticking to the Great Patriotic War for the foreseeable future.

i should note that some of the Ka-50 missions sound cool, and this is maybe the most interesting of the bunch:

have always loved that the Germans had to send a special forces team to rescue Mussolini after they locked him up, that really must’ve been a drain on the war effort, too bad Hitler really got a kick out of the guy so couldn’t leave him hanging

all the dsa twitter kids love the photo of him hanging from a gas station but I personally much prefer the 20 year saga to follow of the Italian government not being able to decide what to do with his remains since they didn’t want to give him a proper burial but they kept being stolen by fascist sympathizers so they had to keep moving his decaying corpse to progressively more secret locations right up until the years of lead

also love that there are like, old fascist government sources that now corroborate that when Mussolini had to enact the Nazi race laws to be consistent with Germany he was apparently like “OK, being racist towards the Africans I can handle, but mamma mia, I don’t want to bother the poor jews”

it’s just my grandma but taller and with an assault rifle

DCS does have a number of WWII things, but the simple fact is once you have modern fighters if you want missions or campaigns or anything, those jets have literally only been used in service of empire, their simple existence is a function of an entire political ideology that can’t be separated from them.

anyway I did in fact throw some of my GME money into the VKB gladiator, and the super expensive shipping did at least manage the job, taking four days to go from china to my doorstep. this thing is way better than my super loose, maybe dying X52, with the exception of the hat switches. I like the mini stick (which only comes with the premium gladiator) a lot, but I prefer the hats on the X52 to the other two VKB hats, which are very stiff. also since the stick takes actual force to move, the grip of the base to my desk ends up inconsistent. it stays more or less stuck, but moving the stick can produce a weird clicking sound that sounds so much like some kind of mechanical defect with the stick that I disassembled the thing to make sure I didn’t fuck something up. I didn’t, and it’s definitely the suction of the base doing weird things. doesn’t happen all the time and I can’t really hear it so far when actually playing a game, so it probably doesn’t matter. maybe I’ll try smashing the thing into the desk a bit next time I play.

but yeah, the x52 had shitty calibration issues that would pull planes in weird directions and take way too much trim micromanaging to correct (above and beyond propeller torque where that is applicable). this just feels so much better.

One day I’ll write up my observation of how blockbusters shifted from lionizing air power to infantry to follow the imperium’s current border wars

since you got the premium, it comes with a little spring-removal tool and a lighter set of springs (#10)

i put those in and havent looked back

i get a strange clicking noise when i go past 60% right deflection on the stick, i thought it was bc i dropped a screw in there but maybe it’s just endemic. works fine

re empire and so on,

Reflecting on this thread… lack of a cohesive career mode really such a flaw for Sturmovik… why do they suppose ppl play these games?
certainly there are an array of ww2 reenactors and fetishists who want Max Accuracy In Multiplayer as the prime game play experience… but one wonders whether the little guy (that’s me, I’m the little guy, just a lil baby person) is being cared for by this single player experience. I just want to cosplay fighter pilot in the historical setting!!

immediately after I fell out of flight Sims I picked up guitar which was a much more fulfilling use of my time… maybe I am just not hard core enough for the True Sim Experience. or more accurately, I am choosing to spend my time elsewhere nowadays.

anyways War Thunder is installed but I’m sure it would piss me off pretty much immediately. my kingdom for IL-2 But Arcade Mode

I have finally made time for Project Wingman and oh my fucking god does this game kick ass, I’m loving it. Definitely better than any of the recent Ace Combats.

Particularly impressed by the environment variety, each one has been pretty distinct in color and feel. Really love punching through the clouds into brilliant sunlight to take out some fighters, then plunging back down into a storm for the ground targets.

As is my custom, I’m going with just russian Migs, using dumbfire rockets, blowing up everything I can with just the gun, and never laying off the afterburner.

Up to mission 11 - really enjoy when you get the elite squadrons dropped on you. Definitely was my favorite part of Belkan War:

Important question: how good is the cockpit view?

The cockpit is well-detailed and has cool effects like the rain streaking off the glass, but I almost never use it outside of the intro of a mission since I’m spinning around so much. I feel like the cockpit of most flight sims blocks half the screen and thus, I’m not inclined to use it.

I tend to like the sci-fi ones since they can justify bulb cockpits and shit like the Titanfall evangelion LCD windows.

I like that they block my view, honestly.

the visiblity issue in cockpits is usually why they give you full freedom of head movement in flight sims. you really do have to be looking for shit 24/7. i love ace combat of course but i won’t pretend like it’s not more fun to frantically look for pixels careening towards you through the sky.

ace combat 7’s missile alert sound is way less scary and more annoying than the evil noise your radar makes when you’re spiked in a flight sim this isn’t really related but god that was my biggest problem with ac7 shut the fuck up and let me fucking focus

the problem is you don’t see the real world out of a 16:9 viewport located some distance away from you. works well if you have a properly situated triple monitor setup or VR or whatever, otherwise not so much

you don’t need vr or a triple monitor setup to maintain awareness in a cockpit setting you just need a game that implements them well (project wingman does not)

the big problem with wingman’s cockpit implementation is that the fov is absurdly, ridiculously low, so you have very poor situational awareness. when you’re actually sitting in a cockpit your face isn’t scrunched up against the OSD like that. I don’t know why monarch can barely fit in the planes they keep putting him in. when you watch yt videos of people playing it in cockpit view without VR you almost never see them looking up/left/right, they rely really heavily on the padlock view, which is not the case when people play IL-2, sf2, dcs or whatever without VR in cockpit view, because all of those games either let you control your fov in the cockpit, have better controls for looking around, or simply just have better cockpit views
