I returned about an hour ago from an emergency veterinary clinic, with an empty pet carrier.

Death

A few days ago, Sophie suddenly started limping, seemingly unable to put weight on one of her front paws. I touched her paw to see if she was in pain but she didn’t seem to be. She hadn’t been outside and I didn’t know how she might have injured herself other than possibly jumping off a piece of furniture and landing wrong. By the next morning her limp was obviously going away and I concluded that she had pulled a muscle.

Tonight, I went to let her inside and, as always, she had been waiting for me on the hood of my vehicle. But this time I came upon a distressing scene. She was dragging herself toward the door with only her front legs, leaving a trail of urine. Several of the neighborhood cats that spend a lot of time in my yard were gathered around, watching her from a distance.

I carried her inside and went to look up the number for an emergency vet that I often drive past. I heard a noise and returned to the kitchen to find that she had dragged herself under the table and tried to jump up onto a chair. She didn’t make it and was hanging from the chair by her front claws.

On my way to the vet I was thinking that this was probably the last night I’d ever see her alive. She probably would never again sit on my desk or in my lap while I was using the computer, and the next time I took a trip for a few days, my other cat would probably be home alone.

The vet confirmed my assumption. She had blood clots and very likely heart disease. It was a painful condition and the prognosis for any attempts at treatment were very poor. Her regular vet had previously detected a heart murmur, going as far as to stop by my place after a checkup to listen to her heart in an environment where she would be calm.

I was able to be with Sophie in her last moments. When the vet brought her in she was on pain medication but was still alert, nervously looking around and obviously wanting to jump off the table. I was able to calm her down, petting her and holding her head as she went limp.

This is one of my earliest photos of my cat Sophie, from 2012 after a vet had revived her from dehydration as an abandoned kitten.

This is probably my favorite photo of her, from 2020. I have a print of this photo hanging on my wall.

We unexpectedly had to put down our cat Koop yesterday morning. We had had her almost 15 years so she has been a constant for most of our relationship. We always joked that she’d be our cat to make it past 20. She was always a healthy cat until she suddenly wasn’t. This is really, really hard.

You almost want to just skip to the part where you don’t think about the loss and notice the absence constantly. But, really, you wouldn’t want to do that even if you could.
