Cartoons

Leo just feels like the biggest departure. He’s a little to laid back and self absorbed. I understand to keep the show light they didn’t make him some kind of stuck up “I would do it better” kind of guy but it just doesn’t feel like Leo if he doesn’t have tunnel vision missing the forest for the trees.

For some reason they uploaded every single musical number from Pop Team Epic in one video.

I have no special inside track beyond following a shitton of animators, but in light of the previously mentioned pissboys, this seems… maybe relevant??

I have always considered the Turtles low-key Black coded and was super pleased with that finally getting explored here a little. But, Internet Screamers have their own views.

yep, sounds like young justice again and for other good shows that found a market, just not the ones executives wanted.

That was a major reason offered for Steven Universe’s baffling schedule and long hiatuses. The “wrong” people watched the show, which meant they lost money every time they aired it, so once they realized there was no fixing this problem they limited the damage as much as possible by airing three episodes every six months on a holiday at some weird hour, when they’d not be making any ad money anyway.

Seriously, though, fucking hell, Infinity Train.

That sure was an end.

There may not be any more unless a lot of people learn that it exists and watch it through official channels, but if that’s how it wraps then, well, fuck, they went for it.

That whole third (maybe final?) season feels like a John Carpenter plunge into the abyss.

Still unpacking a day later, and likely will be for a while. It’s the kind of thing that stays with you, you know.

So, I finally watched seasons 2 and 3 of Infinity Train, back to back. I remember being surprised they’d gone to the end of the basic premise so fast in season 1 and was wondering if they could ever live up to it in further seasons, and… whoa, this is going places. Forget living up to it, it’s completely transcending the setup and ending up with something much greater.

Yeah, the first season is mildly interesting and doesn’t outlast what seems like a limited gimmick. It’s fine, a notable mention with some neat ideas and aesthetics and a decent little personal story.

Then season two is one of the best things I have seen in ages, animated or live-action. And it completely blows open what the show can be in the future.

Then season three, uh. It, uh. It… takes advantage of that opening.

whys it gotta be on hbo

Corporate consolidation. Everything Turner is now owned by Warner Media, and Warner Media is abandoning the ship of cable and moving basically all scripted programming to this new service.

There’s a free trial period! Which also counts toward people officially viewing the show. Otherwise, well. This is the Internet. I’m poor too!

By the way, these two… this was back in Book One.

Summary

Owen Dennis says the ideal situation is to go to eight seasons, because, you know. 8. Which, sideways.

But yeah, everyone’s been let go now, pretty much, and this is the end unless the studio can be convinced that the show is a draw for their little service here. And right now, the plans they’ve pitched and have built up on a server somewhere are… not inspiring the studio. Which still thinks of this as a kids’ show, and can’t see why that audience would be interested in following, say, a grumpy old woman for a whole season. Which has caused Dennis to grump himself about the narrow way animation continues to be perceived here, unless it’s edgy “adult” comedy.

I guess we’ll see. Even if they do get the greenlight, there won’t be any more for a while. They haven’t already been working on any more (beyond planning), they’re gonna have to restaff at this point, and many of the original team members will have new gigs already. And if the pipeline is anything like Steven Universe it takes, like, nine months for an episode to turn around. So this will be it for now.

Storyboard revisionist for the show
