do I need to post Sports Cartoons again to show how serious I am
Yeah like i said, i get you were doing a bit but i do actually care about that shit, and if im seeming harsh itâs only because iâd like to be taken seriously, thanks tho
I get you
Iâve also done a bunch of posting about all persuasion of cartoon in here so I am definitely not the culprit here
but also did you see the Miru Tights post I did in the other thread
watched recently:
she ra
steven universe + future
watching:
avatar
to watch??
adventure time
boondocks
Batman TAS
samurai jack??
other recs? assume i never watch cartoons
im always trying to get people to watch ok ko and tuca and bertie. theyâre genius imo but theyâre very high energy gag a second jsyk. ones very much for kids and the other is not
Nu-ducktales is really good and fun especially if you have nostalgia for disney afternoons
that to-watch is pretty solid!
My kid started watching Avatar recently and I was reminded how god damn good it is, just a perfect kidsâ adventure cartoon, you couldnât do it better
Samurai Jack is amazing, you move it right to the top of that list and take those question marks the hell off
i have been enjoying kipo and the age of wonderbeasts, thereâs a new set of episodes on netflix now that i havenât seen yet.
it is not as good as avatar or any of those âclassicsâ but for a new thing that is not part of the cartoon network world i think itâs pretty good
Legend of Korra is pretty good, but the cancellation/uncancellation see-saw really did a number on its total narrative arc. Where Avatarâs three seasons are clearly all part of one story, Korra is⌠lumpy and disconnected. But itâs still overall good and an important step in representation.
Other shows you might consider include Infinity Train or Over The Garden Wall (both of which feel very similar to meârelatable youths struggling in a strange and otherworldly environment), or Gravity Falls or Star vs the Forces of Evil (endearingly obnoxious SMC-style episodic adventuring builds toward deeper mysteries; I didnât really like individual episodes of either show despite getting more invested than I expected in the arc as a whole. I donât feel like either one quite lived up to its potential).
@familyjules would undoubtedly recommend Bojack Horseman, but it is Pretty Different from most everything people have been talking about (except Tuca & Bertie, which weâre pretty psyched to have coming back)
I liked Gravity Falls significantly more than pretty much all this generation of toons except (maybe) Over the Garden Wall.
hilda on netflix is pretty good too.
Korra is very uneven but does have some good parts. Itâs attempt at political commentary do not hold up to any kind of scrutiny though. Alot of villains just get written out instead of actually addressing the consequences of their actions.
Some good video essays that examine the specific failings in each season.
land of the lustrous is really lovely if youâre up for gem people (tho itâs not influenced by SU at all) searching for meaning in a pastoral post apocalypse, bloodless-yet-still-deeply-uncomfortable body horror, and cool swordfights. really lovely CG by the folks who did Beastars (Beastars is also fantastic.)
(also if you watch & like LOTL please read the manga it is otherworldly & gorgeous in a way the show doesnât really try for. one of my fav comics right now. i find myself staring at pages from it in awe of ishikawaâs sense of composition)
tuca & bertie is brilliant, horny and hilarious. it has so much heart & care poured into it. amazing voice cast too.
eizouken!! three girls (goblin, model, yakuza) starting an animation club at their magical realist high school.
i loved the bit where Zaheer was like âok but like if you think about it all the bad guys were right actuallyâ and he was also pretty unimpeachable except for wanting to kill the protagonist. also i heard a fan theory that he and the tall lady in his crew were a ftm4mtf couple and that really tickled me
i think i like Korra more than Last Airbender but thatâs not to say itâs better made or whatever, i just like the characters and their struggles
also now i know the difference between the threads iâm gonna say in here the last couple episodes of dorohedoro really fell flat for me. nothing really HAPPENED but there was a bunch of very anime bullshit with like, arbitrary rules about contracts? if i wanna fuss over arbitrary rules i can play an MMORPG yâknow. also some lazy homophobic/transphobic humour, and confusing pacing. very little in the way of large lady/large fella bro vibes
have you checked the recent OVAs? they were released this week, i think. five short omake stories from the manga, you might enjoy them
omg what. great news thnku
i liked the first episode of the new adventure time miniseries because it really felt like a weird delightful anime ova special which i guess it kind of functionally is. one of the problems i had with the show was that it got so far into the lore that it felt overwhelming. The BMO special, which just dove into a whole new world altogether, felt freeing in that way but was informed by BMO on an emotional level. i hope each one is 45 minutes because they really get a chance to stretch their legs. also good to know that the frasier theme joins the cheers and mr. belvedere themes as the last remanants of earth lol
i mean thereâs no point to it but the 2011 season was still actually good. like this is the thing that mike judge is somehow the best at. the jodie spinoff of daria is gonna be weird. trying to think if comedy central has even had a show with a black woman lead? like there was a wanda sykes show for a hot second i think?
I donât know what I expected but Close Enough really is just Regular Show with the serial numbers filed off except they can make the adult jokes directly now. Itâs literally âclose enoughâ. Also seems to take place in some version of the Regular Show universe considering assorted background references. Mainly it reminded me of the weirdness of the Turner/Time Warner corporation in that it is a show made by Cartoon Network Studios, âpresentedâ by TBS, and airing on HBO Max. I wonder if Neo-Animaniacs will be the more direct version of this or if that is still being released under the pretense of being made for children.
