rewatching Cross Ange because I picked up the blurays and dealing with the idea that I unironically think the show is good and entertaining and knows exactly what kind of camp it’s selling instead of my original opinion of “lol gud Sunrise train wreck show”
also they used the home video version instead of the broadcast version (which is good) and somehow the process of making everyone more naked made everything less sexy, which is less “titillation is sexier than baring it all” and more everyone looks like dolls because they just took off the steam and light rays and you’re left with featureless flesh. which, honestly, is hilarious.

If you haven’t already, She-Ra’s an enjoyable watch, and it just wrapped up its final season.

wonder if the virus will cause america to develop a broader animation industry for adults after all the studios currently starting to film with elaborate safety measures decide it’s too expensive to bother

I think adult animation and just adults watching cartoons in general has been mainstream long enough that if that was going to happen, it would have already

i’m watching The Boondocks on HBO Max and having a good time with it. never watched it when it was on TV originally (but read the comic), because it was out at a time when i didn’t really have access to it.
i find Aaron McGruder’s politics a little hard to parse sometimes.

yeah I’ve been thinking of watching the show after reading the newspaper comic in high school, let me know what you think
mcgruder occasionally falls into corny respectability politics despite also making fun of them but it is one of the all time greats
do not watch season 4 the aka season where he left aka the season so bad that there are literally no writing credits

i unironically would prefer it if people generally talked about anime in the thread about cartoons, because anime = cartoons, and only talked about anime in my Japanese cartoons thread when its specifically meta discussion about Japanese cartoons as a specific thing please read the op of that thread for more about why!! (it wasn’t really supposed to survive its original axe discussion and was not intended to be a general anime discussion thread!)

the Japanese cartoons thread is for me to shitpost in about the bad shows I like
there’s still plenty of TV and film not in the genre of fantasy and superhero that people like and want to see and won’t be as accepted in animated form
hell, even if you showed the popular animated stuff of those genres in primetime slots, they’d probably get ignored because that’s still not what a mass audience wants (yes, somehow these things are both mainstream and not palatable to a mass audience, god bless the splintering of popular culture)

like, ohohoho ahahaha yes, i get that youre both doing a silly bit, but the memetic segregation of Japanese animation vs animation produced by the rest of the world is in fact a thing that bothers me and that i would like to see perpetuated less
