idk this is something that stood out 2 me bc I really adore this exchange and I feel like the netflix subtitles just read a lot worse at the cost of being probably more accurate, I mean they call shinji the third children in them, as opposed to the third child, which to me kind of says everything?

yeah. as well as the big late change, thereâs a bunch of smaller changes that just dont read as well as the original.
I donât know when Iâll get around to watching the netflix translation, much less the dub. Everything about the new subs makes it seem like the most dry and literal lacking innuendo or poetic liberty - sure I want the most exact original intent, but if you donât localize an equivalent turn of phrase or the way that characterâs personality might speak in english, wtf are you even doing?
Exposition dumps or places with the occasional metaphor like Kaji gives above can be tricky to angle right, now I want to look at the exact dialogue/script for that line. Given his âpersonally experiencedâ male approach speaking to a meek adolescent in context of the series elements, I can like the alien specificity beyond just âdistanceâ, only if the original dialogue contains something of that sort.

Short of someone listening and transcribing (Iâd fumble an attempt) I found the first dialogue as a rough direct translation, the italicized following it seems fairly close to ADVâs old version.
Kaji: The deputy commander is the one with him all the time. Are you asking around about your father?
- Commander Fuyutsuki is the one whoâs always with him. Have you been asking around about your father?
Shinji: I wasnât with him for a long timeâŠ
- I havenât been around him much.
Kaji: So, you donât know.
- So, you donât really know him?
Shinji: But Iâve understood many things about my father recently. About his job, about my mother. SoâŠ
- But Iâve learned a lot about him lately. About his work, about my mother. SoâŠ
Kaji: Thatâs wrong. You just feel like you understood. Well, that is why people try to know each other. Thatâs why life is interesting.
- No, youâre wrong. You only believe that youâve learned. The fact is that people really donât understand themselves, much less each other. Kaji: Kanojo (she, girlfriend in Japanese) in kanji means a woman far way. For us, women exist on the shore across. It means thereâs a river wider and deeper than an ocean between men and women.
- The kanji we use for the word âsheâ literally means âwoman far awayâ. Women will always be on the distant shore of a great gulf of misunderstanding. The current dividing men and women is deeper than the ocean.
Shinji: I canât understand grown-ups.
- I donât understand what being an adult must be like.
they say children instead of child in the dub too, so it sounds as stupid as it reads
thinking about ok k.o. âbig revealâ and still cracking up at both the casualness of the initial reveal and the kind of ultimate looney tunes sam and ralph relationship where a hero and villain can kind of come to a chill custody agreement. itâs interesting that on âk.o. vs finkâ venomous and shadowy figure still seem to maybe be different people/entities. but itâs also like 50/50 if k.o. is casually like âhey dadâ the next time he sees shadowy figure.

i just love that they didnât even bother to feint the plot twist and made it completely obvious if you were paying attention. Like yeah, the guy whose face looks exactly like that other guyâs face and has the same voice is the same guy, duh. itâs a really good running joke, the show is just giving you a deadpan smirk anytime someone voiced by Steven Ogg shows up

Iâm sad that Star vs the Forces of Evil is donezo, but I guess it ended well enough, instead of descending into true mediocrity. Was hoping they were going to do more with Ludo in the end but I think they ran out of time.

I really liked Star vs Evil overall, even if a lot of peeps werenât fond of how it ended. I was just glad to see Star and Marco finally find the right moment to express their true feelings for each other, because Iâm an absolute sucker when characters have believable chemistry and the buildup is patient.
Iâd urge anyone curious to power through the first season though, since the animation style is very hyperactive at times and the tone is not quite defined.
I did get slightly annoyed about the age-old trope of using different accents to help define characters though, but Iâm an accent dork so whatevs.
It is kinda weird how Starâs parents are British-y and sheâs just straight up American
most surprising sonic reference on ok k.o. was honestly having him do the jean ralphio voice for a second
although the chair from the OVA and the bonus world from knuckles chaotix are a close second

carole & tuesday is one of my favorite things this season and if you havenât watched it yet i think that you should. the most recent ep had a ref to one of my favorite characters from cowboy bebop and it left me feeling a little sad at the end.
in case anyone doesnât know c & t takes place in the same universe as bebop but about 70 years after the exploits of spike and the gang. there are two girls who wanna make music in a word that dominated by AIs making them with just their acoustic and keyboard and itâs real cute, great to look at and has a really pleasant OST with some cool guest stars.
youâll have to use a streaming site or a vpn to watch tho because itâs on netflix japan and i guess we canât have things airing there while having other ( legal ) places also airing it so have your ad blockers ready.
