There’s a new PS4 Lineup video out, this time featuring some spiffy animation and a rendition of the ending theme to Kare Kano. If you’ve never seen one before, they’re nicely edited promo videos with lyrics singing about the games on screen. They usually get translated subtitles at some point but I’ve always found them fun to watch regardless. (Browsing through PS Japan’s youtube channel it looks like a lot of them are gone now, probably due to music rights issues. They’ve got an lyric-less version of one of them that’s cool though.)

This rules. And also gives a solid explanation as to why Catacombs are always the best

I took offence at how confusing it was for the author to refer to Wang tiles as “marching squares”, after how he generated them.

still wish this wasn’t a game about cops, but this preview has made me actually kind of interested in the game.

the level design and what I’ve seen of the storytelling look super simplistic, I can’t get a good sense of whether it’s just platinum 4 kids at this point

Given what Clover was it’s strange to say that Platinum’s sense of aesthetics is maybe their weakest aspect. While they’re reverently within the PS2 Capcom 'tude, they seem unsure how to update it for the fifteen years that have passed. Or, when they strike into deliberately different territory, they just can’t quite pull it into something appealing.

Contrast it with the finally back-to-capacity Capcom which does feel like it understands and is shepherding and carrying forth the PS2 house style. I wish Platinum could poach some art and story directors.

The Japanese criminal justice system is fucked up in new and exciting old ways like a total disregard for the presumption of innocence or due process. (And I mean total, not this 92% conviction rate shit in America.)

They don’t typically have guns so they kill fewer people, and they don’t have much opportunity to be racist because of ethnic homogeneity, but I wouldn’t attribute either as anything but a result of circumstance.

W101 was actually pretty aesthetically successful (as well as doing the we’re-on-a-nintendo-platform-so-we’re-doing-cartoons thing somewhat more honestly, though maybe I’m just biased as it was obviously reaching more toward older ultraman type anime than whatever this is), it was more that it wasn’t very interesting to play, and this doesn’t look better so far

That’s the example I’d use as their willingness to try new things not being fully pulled off. I didn’t buy their Viewtiful Joe-esque body shapes and eye-concealing masks selling the world of everyday heroes. I don’t necessarily have an answer, but I’ve fantasized about explicitly toy-like city aesthetics helping the game out, or at least making me play it out of something other than grudging responsibility.

it mostly runs in Cemu so hop to

i also hear they like beating people in custody a whole lot
