bulletin witch

unrelatedly I just checked which of the apps on my Mac are 32-bit so I’d know how long to wait before going to Catalina and the unexpected good news is that all the open source stuff like Crawl and UQM and OpenTTD have already been building for x86-64, and the outstanding offenders are:

ck2
Necrodancer
Invisible Inc.
UT2004
Civ 4

obviously I’m out of luck on the latter two as those are like 15 years old (I think they were both originally PPC binaries even, but they got x86 patches at some point, even getting hold of the x86 UT2004 Mac binaries these days is tricky), ck2 seems likely to get patched as they’re still making new DLC for it and Paradox recently patched their newer engines, and iirc Necrodancer actually used some of Klei’s tooling so the two other laggards might also be tied together in some way.

overall still a lousy deprecation but much less bad than I expected.

Naughty Dog “my ladyfriend died so now I am filled with sorrow and rage and must do one billion murders” is still “my ladyfriend died so now I am filled with sorrow and rage and must do one billion murders” even if the “I” who is motivated to do one billion murders by the lady dying is also a lady

is it just shit video compression or does this look weirdly cheap by ND standards?

like i can’t understand what the selling point is if not to push the envelope of ““Gaming as Cinema”” further than it already has been. otherwise what’s their excuse for not just cranking out platformers and kart racers

Make a new Jak and Daxter you cowards.

If they did would it be a fun platformer or would they make it a grimdark prestige tv drama?

This is a new Jak and Daxter. In TLoU2 you find out their name’s are Joel “Jak” Marduk and Ellie “Daxter” Simmons. Ellie’s girlfriend goes by Crash.

Naughty Dog actually was thinking of doing a new Jak before doing Uncharted and TLoU. The concept art should give you an idea of what the tone was, though honestly I guess it isn’t that surprising considering the general transformation of that series.

wasn’t jak 3 already the grimdark edgy jak and daxter game?

I don’t think the last of us 2 looks bad exactly I just feel like it never needed a sequel

I’ll probably still play it. it will probably still be good.

TLOU (and its great little expansion) felt like the end of Sony having anything interesting to say as a producer or of naughty dog’s directing being impressive rather than canned; that arrived at a time when it was still exciting to consider how far they might push next, and now it all just feels like trudging HBO hyperviolence

Maybe I won’t need to get a PS5

2 was probably the edgiest game. 3 was still had edge but was a bit more smoothed out. They both still had more color than you’d see in TLOU and Uncharted.

Jak 2 was. Jak 3 actually eased up a bit in that regard.
