people on this site have great taste in a lot of stuff. not just games, its really weird

even when people on here enjoy something i fucking loathe, they usually articulate their interests in a way that make me care about what they have to say

ESPECIALLY when theyre wrong

Sure, I agree with that. What’d they change about Odyssey? I don’t think there’s a conceivable universe where I like that game where every last component is mediocre and the setting is a History-Channel-gloss

so i platted odyssey and i literally only have 48 (or 52 its one of those) percent of the trophies now

they also force your character to have straight sex for a baby even though they originally sold ppl on the idea that your character didnt have love interests and could be read as GAYYYYYY

they increased the level cap a whole bunch too

yeah I appreciate seeing people on here make the effort to articulate why they’re into something even if I don’t care for it, because that makes me willing to go through the effort of explaining why I like something even if other people on here don’t. good forum culture is infinitely better than the kind of shitty non-discussions twitter has cultivated with character limits and…well, everything about that fucking website

I’ve never been as attracted to and excited about a turn-based RPG battle system as basically every RPG Atlus put out in the PS2 era (by Persona 5, though, it’s been polished past the point of real interest).

If it weren’t for SB, I may not have discovered Souls games (or at least not been such an early adopter–I bought a PS3 for Demon’s because SB told me to) or Zeroranger. And more. But I’d be missing out on a lot without those.

Does raising the level cap later bother you? I did that in the last game I shipped and I believe it’s a good strategy to satisfy both the people who want to do it and get out near release, and the people who want to stick around for months.

The baby narrative was real unfortunate, I’m pretty sure that content was locked long before anyone knew Kassandra would be picked up by the community as a gay icon. A real interesting stumble of authorial voice vs player-synthesized storytelling. It’s probably also them aping BioWare and slowly learning what Edmonton learned a decade ago, about how people conceive of the avatar/player relationship.

it’s a game that already cries out to have the content trimmed down and they just immediately started piling on more and more shit, and one of the big problems with that is that it became impossible to distinguish what was already in the game and what was something they had just added that you could safely ignore. they raised the level cap a bunch, they started adding stuff onto the already bloated skill trees, like just More in that annoying ubisoft way where it feels like some designer somewhere in that tangled mess of development teams should have been taken aside and asked if it was all really that necessary. i remember starting it up one day like a month after it came out to try and finish it and seeing like 3 different new things attached to my equipment and the skill trees that i had to suddenly figure out and immediately turned it off instead. i didn’t get into the game because of all the weird MMO shit they put into it, i got into it despite those things

also as daphny said one of the DLCs that came out pretty soon after released forced you to have a fucking baby wth some random guy/girl which is a big fucking problem when the game lets you determine your sexuality in a way that felt natural and not pandering. the things I liked the most about odyssey were kassandra and the writing and BEING FUCKING GAY so having the developers tell me to go fuck myself because a male writer was really into the idea of kassandra having a baby with a stranger was pretty insulting

if i didnt get the plat when i did it would have bothered me cuz one of the trophies is hit max level, and i decided i had to go ALL THE WAY in my first assassins creed game.

but yeah raising max level in a single player game is pointless padding i wouldn’t welcome it in other one player games either

like they just kept piling MMO features into odyssey in such a weird way

Ah, ok. My perception from a dozen hours at launch was that the aesthetic was already primarily ‘more [bland] content than humanly conceivable’ – and that was clearly their strategy, so I’m surprised at a reaction that the launch content was just right, and the later content was too much.

It’s terrifying how fast and quickly they shipped those expansions.

i mean even as someone who loved the launch version i remember telling daphny “there is way too much shit in this game” after playing it for like, 2 days. but kassandra and the writing was charming enough and there were enough side quests in each region that hit those notes where i was willing to deal with it. unfortunately ubisoft had other ideas and the wealth of NEW SIDEQUESTS WOWOWOWOW!!! they got to work adding immediately started to drown out the stuff i was enjoying. if they didnt add anything else to odyssey i would have probably recommended it to people under the disclaimer that the game is too fucking big but kassandra is a great protagonist because i spent like 2 hours cumulatively staring at her arms and watching her roll her eyes at loser men like socrates is well worth the time investment

I was about to joke that we need to split this tangent into a thread titled “videogames SUCK… or do they??” but then I realized that describes literally all sb discourse

SB3 will be daphny as admin and the forum will be renamed to “videogames SUCK…or do they??” consisting of one giant thread where we spend all our time posting from the retirement home about whether or not Streets of Rage 3 is a better game than 2 and there are 14 other conversations going on at once

i was never the big mainstream games guy in the first place, but this year i’ve been making a lot less “it’s in a psn sale for less than £10” impulse buys, and instead saving up for like, games that only get english releases in south east asia, and physical copies of vita games, and so on. i think it’s worked out pretty well so far.

kassandras arms definitely… pulled me through odyssey

Wasn’t the turn based combat dismissed as an April Fool’s joke a while ago? Assuming the gameplay footage is now legit, this looks excellent

we all thought it was an april fool’s joke but it turns out it was just stealthily introducing people to the new combat

I’ve always admired the Yakuza games from a distance. The closest I got is the first chapter in 0 after beating that one officer asshole before Kiryu left the family. I just found it to slow a burn to stay with it and the action is just loose enough to be annoying. The Platinum fan in me just feels like I’m wasting my time when the game doesn’t care if I’m just chugging energy drinks to stay alive and tank through fights. I prefer action game for game feel but I can see the change to a jRPG format help the game feel like its wasting less of my time provided the encounters are more meaning full and better paced.

honestly more than making battles faster I wish they’d speed up the cutscenes; there’s no reason to spend 40 minutes on a pulp scene that would take a movie 5

evidently you haven’t watched enough good Japanese yakuza films. the “30 minutes of old Japanese men sitting in a room smoking and scowling at each other -> something extremely violent -> more Japanese men yelling at each other” structure is incredibly Battles without Honor and Humanity and I hope the yakuza devs never stop cribbing from it

the main character of the first film is really obviously an inspiration for Kiryu
