Everyone knows the best JRPG of the past 10 years is Mass Effect 2
you just mixed up mgs2 and 3 yesterday come on
oh my post was definitely not directed at you, more at people on twitter being babies
stone soup’s gone anti-simulationist. this is nethack spelunky.
my aging ass is so here for jrpg mechanics
im fucking tired of every game that would be a jrpg having action battles, having to be ready for button mashy hell annoys me more than a turn based battle. in both systems you’ll literally be mashing a single button to get through the easy battles/avoiding them entirely so i really dont mind at all
i think i have the same problem with platinum-esque action battles that normal people do with turn based shit. like its incredibly samey eye candy and ridiculous button combinations! most games have that stupid bullshit where everything slows down when somethings supposed to look cool but it all feels identical because its same fight over and over again. even I get sick of seeing the same over the top violent finisher. it was super cool at first but for seven yakuza games i have been stomping peoples faces harder and harder into the ground and i wouldnt mind casting kaboom instead
the yakuza battle system turned into a weird menu hell anyway because they piled more and more stuff on top of it, i could have done without stances and just picked which moves i wanted to use in one stance, like… like god hand.
also like i said in another thread, most modern games are an unending service. jrpgs are the time respecters now because they fuckin end!
also also jrpg yakuza looks like it has some neat positioning stuff
it’s awful when a game has an action-based battle system but then still has random battles that transition you into a battle field.
John Carmack was on JRE

all battle systems should just do the earthbound thing where eventually easy battles just have the enemy fall over dead from you making eye contact and all games should have like 4/5ths of the combat encounters taken out
like turning heat moves into JRPG skills makes perfect sense to me because that’s basically already what they are, except now i trigger it through a menu instead of having to stand in the right spot and hit triangle. thats…totally fine! its not like im doing less than i was doing in the first place.
it taking 7 games for them to address this is definitely part of why i have yakuza combat fatigue
the 3DS remake of Radiant Historia has an “Friendly” mode where doing pre-emptive strikes on enemies kills them instantly which still gets you the XP and loot, and I recommend everybody play on that difficulty if only to take advantage of this feature when you get bored of having to do the same fights over and over again because Time Travel even if the battle system is really fucking cool
instead of heat moves you get PEPPED UP (sorry not sorry tim, pepped up is actually cute and cool)
i’ve seen a ton of posts from western gamers bitching about the new combat already so i imagine we’ll probably only get one game like this regardless of how good it is because people already hate it and probably won’t actually give it a fair chance when 7 comes out here next year
stop me if I’m being a boor here but I’ve never really understood this “the two genres” point where everything is either like assassins creed or dragon quest (both of which have for that matter getting more similar to each other for years). I think I kind of wince at it because to me neverending lawnmower loot grinds are like the only genre more boring than jRPGs and well there’s actually quite a lot out there that’s not in those two categories unless you’re only looking at what’s legitimized at the very highest budget level of American* or Japanese games respectively
*Ubisoft are French but it is a more specifically American than broadly western thing otherwise
because in mainstream gaming culture there are pretty much two genres. the shit i like and the shit i dont
also with yakuza its literally those two different genres
I need a bot that just gets disgruntled whenever people don’t actively ignore what’s perceived as mainstream
theres no reason to ignore the mainstream discussion because even if you have niche ideas not based on it they’re influenced by it because everyone around you talks about it and it seeps into your brain
yeah I know that’s exactly where I’m an outlier which is fair
also we’re TALKING ABOUT MAINSTREAM GAME FRANCHISES so ??? what is this post even
