Putting this here because I don’t know where else to:
I was thinking about HP Lovecraft and his racism and all that, and it occurred to me that he was definitely right about one thing: if you’re a cowardly racist, knowledge is fucking terrifying. Imagine going your whole life thinking that you are superior, that your goal in life should be to prop up and push forward the “white race” and that all other people are inferior. Imagine finding out that, even in some small way, you were wrong. Everything could come tumbling down; your whole life was spent in a meaningless pursuit, everything you based your pride and confidence evaporating instantaneously. Poof. You would do anything to avoid this, and you might lose your entire shit if you couldn’t.
I think this holds true of any intellectual cowardice like Lovecraft’s, even without racism. Any falsehood that you totally dedicate yourself to is going to vaccinate you against alternative worldviews. Any that do sneak in might necessitate a total change in your perspective, and that is daunting. If your world is flat, then anything with more depth is an impossible shape, too terrifying to even consider.
I think part of my obsession with Lovecraftian stuff is the mind-altering nature of knowledge. I like to think that I approach knowledge with a willingness to change even in the face of discomfort and frustration, partially because I’m aware of the fact that you can never un-know something. Learning is scary, and it should be!! Knowledge literally changes the shape of your brain. You are doing brain surgery on yourself, which is amazing. Why the hell would you stop doing that just because it’s scary?
Anyway.
This is some, like, Lovecraft 101 kinda stuff but it just occurred to me that he was absolutely right about the nature of knowledge, and the thing he was wrong about was his constant rejection of that knowledge.

The crazy thing about Lovecraft is that its always the marginalized folks who have a more accurate understanding of the universe. The WASPs on the other hand, if they get even the vaguest hint of how things really are, go insane.
There is really something to this, I think. Lovecraft’s work is sort of like WASP malaise (in analogy to heterosexual malaise) - its an expression of just how unsatisfying and repressed the whole anglosphere is compared to the true scope and scale of the universal condition.
I also have a theory that Herbert West: Re-Animator is about being gay. Two guys running around living together doing crazy things at night in the basement, always afraid that they are going to get caught. Sometimes I wonder if there isn’t something genuinely Freudian about this guy who can’t write a story without someone going deep down in a hole and then being driven insane by what is in there.

Ask not for whom the pogger pogs. It pogs for thee.
people always complain about how a lot of mechanical engineering just produces phallic symbols but I have a really hard time imagining how a flying vulva would be at all aerodynamic
my wife said “why does it want to fly?” which is fair but now I’m imagining some misbegotten diversity consultant at boeing who’s got a bunch of abortive CAD diagrams of intricately modelled labia with a couple of rocket engines just awkwardly stuck to the sides because he can’t quite figure out how else it’s supposed to work, and cracking myself up
