Blizzard DOTA
i probably should have mentioned that tassadar is pretty hard to play well. you have to be able to predict really well who is going to take damage
bro I played league that shit is just janna shield I got it on lockdown. if there was a support in league that had a shield, a wall, an invulnerability and an annoying aoe poke in lane, they’d probably be god tier.

lets EVALUTATE my performance over the course of this f2p weekend!

kael’thas: got shit on (but won)
li ming: dunked kids (but lost)
greymane: got shit on
thrall: did ok (lost)
sonya: spin to win split push (lost)
leoric: dunked kids
artanis: dunked kids
johanna: dunked kids
the butcher: got shit on
stitches: did ok, but sure did miss a lot of hooks (won? maybe?)
xul: did pretty well (won)
kharazim: sure did heal a lot (won)
tassadar: dunked kids
sylvanas: dunked kids (wtf she disables towers permanently)
zagara: got shit on
nazeebo: got shit on

not bad. probably had the most fun as tanks and the specialists that I didn’t get shit on while playing. some things I noticed 1) laning doesn’t mean much, but for what it does mean playing league sure does make you better at it than the equivalently skilled noobs I played against that presumably have not played a shit ton of league. I got first blood like every game where it was reasonably possible to do so (except for some of those games where I got shit on). I pushed and didn’t die for free to ganks (very often), and I humorously watched people over extend in 2v1 lanes and get double killed trying to take me by my towers. good times. 2) if everyone is aram-ing it up and you leave to go push a side lane with some regularity, you’re probably going to win if the enemy team doesn’t match, because you’re going to end up two levels up on them. I did this literally every game.

list of champions I did not play that I now have thoughts on: 1) nova. wtf is this chick. near as I can tell she is always invisible, there are always two of her, she is always standing directly on top of you while invisible no matter where you are, and she kills you in two hits. is she the top pubstomper? is this the one? 2) illidan. if the enemy team has an illidan you are going to win because they are going to yolo dive and kill themselves over and over. this game’s yasuo. 3) abathur. the guy playing abathur is always on your team, he’s always level 10 or below, he’s going to DC/rage quit half the time, and you’re going to lose. 4) li ming. ok I’m cheating I did play her, but whatever. she is in every game. absolutely every single one. often times on both teams.

list of champs I never saw in any of my games: dehaka, rexxar, lost vikings, rehgar, brightwing, tyrael, muradin, uther, maybe tyrande? champs I would not have seen had I not played them myself: leoric, nazeebo, artanis

thing about this game that bothers me the most: the maps. this game was originally called BLIZZARD ALL STARS. it is a game about a bunch of BLIZZARD ALL STARS fighting each other. where do they come together to fight? plantville. desert level. generic fantasy place. pirate land. wtf is this shit. the only map that has anything to do with a BLIZZARD VIDEO GAME is that crappy Diablo map. maybe the SPOOKY TOWN is supposed to be gilneas? for my sanity I at least pretended it was. why aren’t I fighting in fucking orgrimmar? one of a million starcraft maps? warsong gulch? TRISTRAM? HILLSBRAD? BLACKROCK MOUNTAIN? DALARAN?!?

every Blizzard Person is going to have thoughts on the roster, but I don’t think it is unreasonable to wtf out at some of the warcraft choices that don’t actually exist. as I said, lunara is not real. murky and brightwing are also not real. ETC is a gross band of blizzard fans that was eventually put in wow as a joke. they ain’t real. I think it’s cool that they have some niche or unexpected warcraft characters in here like genn greymane, kael’thas, cho’gall, etc., but they sure do have a lot of them. chen AND li li? anub’arak? falstad? I mean they didn’t even have thrall in this shit for a long time. I can’t play as grom OR garrosh? medivh OR khadgar? no gul’dan? varian OR anduin? tirion? they got dragons in warcraft, they don’t want no dragons in this game? no lothar OR turalyon? DOOMHAMMER?!

where deckard cain at. you telling me you can’t make a deckard cain support or specialist?

overall I had a lot more fun with this game than I did any of the other times I’ve tried it, going back to alpha. a lot of this is probably because I had all the characters! who knew? the unlocking system in this game is terrifying. it’s worse than league, which is awful. I’ve never not played this game with some kind of gold boost. I’m no vet or anything, obviously, but I’ve got some games under my belt. this weekend I played 16 games. I completed three daily quests, and I had a 50% gold boost from some stimpack for all of it. I’ve played three other periods of time where they gave you gold boosts. I’ve spent gold one time, on Valla, who is what, like 1000 gold? through all of that, I still don’t have enough gold to purchase ONE character at the highest price tier, which encompasses something like half the roster. that’s abysmal.

this game would become 1000% better overnight if all the heroes were unlocked like dota2 and you could only grind for hero levels and portraits and pay for skins and mounts

it’s a really annoying version of the sunk cost fallacy that this doesn’t bother me anymore, but oh my did it bother me when i first started

ultimately i have enough fun in the game now that i’m able to forgive all the time early on where i was too busy being hopping mad at how tedious the unlocks were to enjoy the game

but i should also note that i’ve spent exactly 0 dollars on this game, and it’s a pretty decent deal at that price. any more and i’d be a lot more unhappy

I think about this even outside of this game, because I think about how awful it would be to play league of legends in the year 2016 if you’ve never played league of legends before. I’ve played for years, and played seriously for at least two straight years, and I have like 75-80 characters. do I care that I don’t have all the characters? no, not really, but having spent probably thousands of hours and still not unlocking even close to everything is kind of mortifying. if I had just started playing I’d have no idea what to do, because 75% of the cast costs an amount of IP that is ridiculous for a new player. hots has far fewer characters, but they cost even more. buying anything instantly feels like losing, because you’re not going to get anything else for an eternity. you sure better like that character!

the smallest SMALLEST defense i can muster regarding the unlocks is that they let you try the hero out before you buy it, but ONLY in a single-lane vs. cpu so it’s still pretty dumb!

I spent money on this game for rexxar! that’s pretty much the extent of my money spendage in hots

I was also looking at the roster and did the little filter thing to see what the ratio of heroes was and WOW there are a lot of warcraft heroes! there’s probably as many warcraft heroes as there are diablo and starcraft combined, which is a little disappointing. I know that the whole point is that you’re playing legendary heroes of blizzard lore but like, I can just play a zergling without any lore behind it and have fun you know?

yeah, it’s a cool feature, but it has little bearing on how the unlock meta game actually plays out. but coming from league there are a lot of little things like that that are way better in this game. you can actually change settings and hotkeys outside of a match! you can set different smart cast settings on a per character basis! when you’re buying/browsing skins, you can actually see them before you buy them! for the first four years of league’s life, there was no way to pick a character or role to play before you got into a game lobby. until three months ago, you could not do this at all in ranked (now you pick a role at least, but you pick two and it does not weigh your primary role above your secondary at all). pings did not exist for three years, I think?

inevitable, really. it is hard to communicate how many more characters exist in the warcraft universe than in everything else blizzard has ever made combined. to keep starcraft reasonably competitive, they’ve already made Seige Tank, The Character and Medic, The Character. I would imagine there are going to be more things like that.

Where’s Blackthorn?

I would play that shit instantly

Oh, they buffed/nerfed a bunch of ults to bring their win rates in line

Oh, they doubled the damage Li Li’s Water Dragon does

My God.

the only one that seems overkill is the change to haymaker

Haymaker (R)
Damage dealt to secondary targets increased from 25% to 100% damage of Haymaker’s primary target damage.

is pretty huge, and allows haymaker to be used defensively as a poking tool without always relying on “playmaker” type isolation plays. we’ll see how it plays out, but right now it looks like a big buff to a heroic decision that was already close to 50/50 at the pro level (since the Avatar mini-stun nerf) for unquestionably the best warrior/tank in the game right now

savage

Yaaaay!

Water Dragon is so hilarious, whenever I take it (aka when I get QM’d to a multi-healer team), I’m always shocked at how brutal the slow is.

so I’ve still been playing this!

I made the discovery that leveling a hero to 5 gets you 500 gold. with the exp boost they have until the 18th and the stimpack I have for some reason, that takes 2 or 3 games. so I’ve spiked to 16500 gold, which is still fuck all, but hey, I can get some heroes if I want. which I don’t, because I can just fuck around leveling the weekly heroes for a while. fuck you, blizzard. they obviously have scientists behind this shit. but I’ve had fun with characters I probably wouldn’t have played, like siege tank and rehgar. also getting level 20 apparently gave me some pet in wow. I wonder if I can sell it.

Tracer in heroes has a Gears of War-style active reload talent lol

tracer looks cool. brightwing will absolutely stomp her!

uther too.

yay!

(because they both have untargeted CC that can’t be recalled)

She seems straight busted as long as her damage is ok

Wouldn’t be the first game where she does that

Is her long ranged damage still stupid in Overwatch, then?

Long, no, mid-range, yeah

Good thing she has a soggy napkin for health

Well, there’s that. She used to duel snipers and shit

how do I play sylvanas

AFK push a lane, figure out your distance, team up to push forts/towers since you disable them, use either ult to set up kills
