2nd Best Current-Gen Power-Up Racer?

There haven’t been a lot of good power-up racers this gen, and a lot of them have just been mobile ports or remasters. We all know Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best, but which one is second-best?

  • Team Sonic Racing
  • Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled
  • GRIP
  • WipEout Omega Collection

I considered including Garfield Kart for the trolls, but decided I didn’t want to give you the satisfaction.

I voted Wipeout but I really liked Crash Team Racing when I was younger. It was better than Mario Kart 64, at least for casual play. The items seemed “more fair” and the boost system was both more intuitive and felt better. The new one is just a remake, so all the same stuff should apply, but I think the newer Mario Karts took some ideas from CTR and improved in the interim.

Haven’t actually played any of these games but voted Wipeout because it’s always Wipeout

since it is the only game i have played on that list, had to vote for Sonic Team Racing, even though it has a few problems to deal with.

First is that it had to follow up the best kart racer since Super Mario Kart, and this is a fact, see that extensive study from that PhD Rob Otnik that mysteriously disappeared*
Srsly tho, it is mind boggingly crazy that it even exists, and in hindsight feels like one of those rare games that only could have been made at that exact time, where tech, enthusiasm and craftsmanship of the team (at times it feels like F-Zero GX!) , as well as finances and decisionmaking met to greenlight what we got.

Second is that the team rightfully accepted that they could not follow up TRANSFORMED, and just didn't. I feel like Mario Kart is the prime example of a series that tried too many times to follow up with the least amount of changes to repeat the formula without alienating a core brand customer base of installment-1, and, considering their numbers, successful at that. So it must be my name that makes me hate on them!... That list doesn't go well, i think!

Srlsy tho, part 2: I feel like they tried to repeat TRANSFORMED, in early development realized they just couldn’t pull it off, and then tried to engineer a core gameplay they can handle… which is the only explanation i can think of why it feels a bit off at times, with sudden glimpses of excellence hidden beneath a layer of goodish’ness that, at worst, doesn’t captivate. I would love to know what went on behind the walls of the dev team(s?) that made them come up with what we got, and especially what they tried, and didn’t do.

.... errrmmm..... so.... yeah, why would you now want to play Team Racing. Well, if you have been playing TRANSFORMED on and off for soon'ish a decade by now, it is time to move on and try sth new?

*: i know… wait… i hope that this j/k isn’t actually true, don’t @ me if you should find such a thesis.

… tl;dr is… play TRANSFORMED?

Garfield is fucking awful and is one of the few words I’ve muted on twitter and I definitely knock anyone who links Garfield related content down a few notches on my own personal Liked Person Tier List and this is all despite the fact that I learned I could draw thanks to Garfield. That is how bad Garfield is.

Sorry if this offends. Maybe get better taste in cartoon cats. B. Kliban drew a bunch.

Mario Kart 8 is boring. That’s the sad truth. I’ve played it for like half an hour total so I’m an expert on it. I always found it too slow and have been too lazy to try it out after it got that 200cc update or whatever. But I will stick to my guns.

WipEout Omega Collection is really good, and absolutely mind blowing in VR. I don’t feel like it always compares to the likes of kart racers though due to it’s stronger emphasis on execution of the controls (controlling left and right brakes), where it can feel like its melds a bit into what a “sim” might be, while kart racers tend to let you be a lot more loose and goofy.

Edit: Also Wipeout has cooler logos.

This thread is not for Mario Kart 8 talk; no one respects OPs on this forum! You may not agree, but in this thread it’s a foregone conclusion that Mario Kart 8 is the best.

idk why we ever established that OPs make the rules but I love the law and I respect it as a patriot every day

yeah the OP thing is incredibly unintuitive to the way that this modern, basically sensible software works

anyway sonic transformed was absolutely unprecedentedly great, that was sumo at their best and now we’ve got wipeout at its best

Unfortunately haven’t played any of them besides MK8, which is a shame cuz I really am extremely excited about both Team Sonic Racing and Wipeout, but even having not played them, and even as someone who has historically been pretty damn ambivalent re: mario kart, i cannot dispute the OP’s claim that it’s transcendent.

BTW, WipEout actually has people playing online this week thanks to PS+, enjoy it while it lasts (it was empty two weeks ago).

If anyone has Xbox Gamepass and likes WipEout, I highly recommend GRIP. The online is dead, but the campaign is fun.

Personally, I enjoyed the new Sonic out of all of these, but the lobby is dead since it doesn’t let you sit in races in progress (and because it doesn’t have a Battle Pass Skinner Box like Crash).
