In order to access “1P vs. 2P Mode” (or “VS. Mode” according to website and flyer), players must insert two coins to access this mode similar to most fighting games at the time, choose between the three heroes and five bosses and knock out one another in two-out-of-three rounds. The winner will either move on to fight against CPU players or another real player will join in and choose a character, while the winner will not be able to select another character. The fighting rules are the same as “Mission Mode”, but in versus-style.

Kaze Kiri is a PC-Engine CD game that’s fun as heck. There’s not multiple planes of action like with most belt scrollers. This is more like Kung Fu Master or Trojan (or Rush n Attack) more than anything else. It’s like a platformer without any platforms, just lots of attack options. It’s also lacking in power ups. What you have is what you have and it’s up to you to just get better with your moveset.

It’s tight and responsive. I feel like I’d enjoy a two player mode but I’m emulating on my lappy so that’s not happening much either way. A great little game, full of zez. Nice single plane brawlers feel like rarities even if loki’s blog seems to cover scads of them sometimes.

River City Girls Zero (current gen consoles)

It’s a port of the 1994 Super Famicom game Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka by Almanic (published by Technos Japan).

Saw one of these in the Steam new release list (because it theoretically put up a demo, not because it is actually out) and it is the most Splatterhouse looking game I’ve seen in ages.


Seeing a guy in a hockey mask do the typical beat 'em up jumping karate kick in the trailer made me chuckle BTW.

They seem to be one of those devs who do unashamed worships of slightly more obscure arcade-era games, with somewhat mixed results.

There’s an unlockable version of this in the PS3 collection Final Fight: Double Impact. According to that, it’s season 2, episode 25 of the Street Fighter USA cartoon (so the series’ second-to-last episode, originally airing April 27, 1997, according to Wikipedia).

And now I don’t need to play through Final Fight ever again. ; P

what about the final fight romhack that lets you play as a few enemies, including poison and andore? (it still doesn’t make it into a good game though)

this reminds me, i still haven’t played the “more enemies” hack of final fight 2, which supposedly is a big improvement to what was already the best in the series

Can’t remap the controls. “Challenges” appear over the screen during gameplay. The game isn’t actually paused while you’re changing Settings, even in single-player. There’s no pre-set full-screen-height setting, and no fixed screen aspect ratio when setting one yourself manually–you have to set height and width independently. You can’t watch the intro and ending in your own screen settings, only in the default “simulated arcade screen” settings.

Network play seemed to work okay and the default but optional AST grew on me. Some of the unlockable concept art is interesting.

In single player there were numerous times when the game seemed to swallow inputs with a lot of activity on-screen, but that may just be how Final Fight works, I don’t remember.

Have there been any Japanese-developed 2D isometric beat-em-ups in recent years or have they all been Western-developed? The only one I can think of from Japan lately is Double Dragon IV–made by some of the old team and it was a technical mess.

Oh yeah and I guess they’ve also done some of those more brawler-style Kunio games.

I guess I was thinking roughly PS4 generation and up, but now that you mention it, the Japanese 2D isometric beat 'em up scene has been pretty darn dry since after PS1, hasn’t it?

stumbled across this weird thing that came out this year (maybe i missed it upthread) with youtuber maximillian dood and the crush 40 guy on the soundtrack and yooka laylee(?). seems like an oddball title
