damn sounds like somebody needs to play more gloopily “meditative” zen-flavour artgames about humanity’s place in the grand scheme of things… maybe get some perspective about the futility of existence, things of that nature.

Crypto art is the worst joke

think this might be in response to a thread I saw earlier this week about the ecological impact of crypto mining, written by a digital artist called Memo Akten. I can’t link the thread right here for some reason, but I’m not sure how to take this if that is the context.

i think they’re the person who set up the site in the second link!

deleted a meaner post about o’reilly, since i sorta do feel glad there’s at least one developer i can or could heartily dislike for personal aesthetic reasons rather than because they have a dozen blog posts advocating replacement theory or something.

oh right didn’t see that link! this is awesome haha

i like some of this dude’s early video art work but everything he’s done since esp in the videogame realm has made me steadily dislike him and his work more and more. i really don’t like him! his ideas for his games are also skin-deep and marketed towards the kind of middlebrow crowd you’d think he’d be interested in skewering given his predilection for heavy irony… except he actually depends on their money in order to be considered relevant and someone worth paying attention to. they’re the only ones who will appreciate the novelty of his perspective while continually overlooking the obvious flaws and cynical one-dimensionality in his work because he has the nebulous thing of Clout.

when i saw Everything come out around the same time as Oikospiel Book I early in 2017 it made me realize so clearly in a way i hadn’t before where the really interesting and innovative art was coming from. but O’Reilly has that Clout from doing cocaine and blood sacrifices with rich art people that so many games people i know who are mostly just weirdo outsiders but have made far more interesting work don’t, so i guess it doesn’t matter!

I remember playing both mountain and everything and thinking “huh, that’s cute” and then never thinking about them again until these posts.

The best part of Elite Dangerous was/is the model of the Milky Way, it really gave me an understanding of where the Earth is located and the distances involved. It’s a much better model than that sculpture (unless I’ve missed something).

i find it darkly humorous that the one big prestige game that got attention via the Game Awards that seemed like this harmless wholesome game that featured a queer-looking black female main character… is from the studio where someone suggested that its female main character playing guitar “wasn’t realistic”, because guitars are too complicated for women, and that she should play a ukelele instead.

Ubisoft sure knows how to produce some real winners! lol
