"I have no facial animations, and I must scream"
In 20XX, narratives in popular vidcons declared a war on whimsy and made an obvious beeline towards feature film, opening the floodgates on the always awkward world of voice acting in games. How can so much talent, effort, and money be pooled in the service of an element so frequently cast off as being mediocre (or at best, serviceable)? We attempt to answer these questions, and more, and more, and more.

Stay tuned after the "end" of the program because there's an extra 45 minutes of Deets and I sitting on the porch, drinking iced tea and whittling the afternoon away.

Introducing Megaman 3 Password Screen Music in Human Form
The SBDNPC returns to talk about disappointments, and in a highly appropriate turn of events puts forth very little effort at delivering on the topic. Well, that's not entirely true; we still manage to talk about Chrono Cross, Double Dragon Neon, and potential future disappointments like OUYA and Wii U.
Nevertheless you'll still get a solid hour and twenty minutes of free-association videogame discussion, provided you don't mind that discussion being a long-form audio essay on the virtues of male pregnancy/smothering your children with Angry Birds merchandise.
Oh, you mind... *gurk!*

CASTLEVANIA: CIRCLEOFTHEMOON
Circle of the Moon (CotM) is the first of the Game Boy Advance Castlevanias, and the last one on the platform that I’m giving a thread to. It’s the one which I’ve had the most vacillating feelings for. Most of those feelings have found resolution in lethargy. This, coupled with the history of vacillation, makes it difficult to find a starting point for talking. Note that I started this playthrough – of a few-hours-long game – last October, only returned to, and finished, it again a few months ago, and have put off writing about it since. After thinking it over, I thought I’d begin where CotM is usually positioned by others – as an ignored breath of hope for the series –, because this is where one of my main contentions lies.
Evolutionarily, my interests in Castlevania . . . Read more

Select Button alum Anna "dessgeega" Anthropy has observed on a few occasions that most vertical shmups are no longer games about survival. This isn't immediately obvious, though, as games like Giga Wing and Ikaruga emphasise their unique shielding mechanics and toys from the outset. What is Ikaruga known as, if it isn't The Shmup Where Half The Bullets Don't Hurt You? But deeper and less accessible point-scoring dynamics lie beneath the surface of these games, and the further you go, the more their designs fixate on them, with the player's ability to survive being taken for granted. Why else is Ikaruga replete with triplets of enemies, if not to be linked in vast unbroken scoring chains? Why else is the brutal coin-feeding arcade-style level progression still so standard, so unquestioned?
Even Jamestown, designed to be the Shmup For The Rest Of Us, with its level-select . . . Read more

Soon we will all live in the uncanny valley - I myself have a very nice little villa down there.
AGAINST ALL ODDS the Select Button Podcast makes it to episode fifty, so we're celebrating by putting the brakes on the cynicism long enough to talk about the experiences we'd like to have in GAMES OF THE FUTURE.
Well, not really. We just spend the whole two hours watching sweet GTA San Andreas youtube vids, sobbing, and edging ever nearer to the Red Button.
